Is Kindle Worlds a good thing?

May 25, 2013 21:07

So Amazon.Com has created a format for fanfiction writers to sell their stories. It's called Kindle Worlds and at this time is only open for three shows: Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars.

Sounds kinda fun at first, but as this person points out, it may be author beware:

Why am I so upset about Amazon launching a program geared toward promoting and publishing fanfiction? Simply because I loath the idea of a corporation sticking its greedy fingers into our by-the-people-for-the-people, free-of-charge, free-of-corruption art form. I fear it will taint the experience for many people, who will lose sight of the beauty of creating art for art’s sake. That loss alone would be enough to make me angry, but when I read the following, I become furious:

“By using the platform, authors give all rights to the work to Amazon, who can then license your elements to other authors with no compensation to the original poster.”

Thoughts?

My questions are 1 - are people going to pay for something they've been getting for free all this time? and 2 - are authors going to get a good, fair deal in the end?
