John glances in the rear-view mirror and scowls at the boys, stretched out in the backseat like sleepy puppies. The sight would have warmed his heart a few months ago, before he’d caught a news program about car crash fatalities.
“Belts on!”
Dean yawns and grumbles but he puts Sam’s belt on and then his own. Sam glares at John in the rearview mirror, his little face scrunched up in annoyance.
Twenty miles later they’re still belted in but slumped together, Sam’s head resting in the crook of Dean’s neck.
John doesn’t have the heart to wake them up again.
