Both Mary and John were surprised by how excited little Dean was to learn he was going to be a big brother. Since he wasn't in school yet, he went to all of Mary's appointments with her, asking lots of questions and absorbing the information like a sponge. His enthusiasm for big brotherhood even seemed to surpass the allure of Christmas, but he seemed eager enough to open presents Christmas morning.

The family sat around their little tree, and John had Dean bring him gifts one by one so he could read the tags, and then Dean handed them out for opening. They didn't have quite as many presents as some probably did, but they managed to do pretty well for their budget. Dean especially loved a tee-shirt that read "#1 Big Brother!" However, as the gifts dwindled, Dean began to frown. Mary was about to ask what was wrong when Dean beat her to the punch.

"How come there's nothin' for the baby?" Dean asked accusingly.

"The baby's not here yet, Deano," John started to explain.

"Yes it is!" Dean retorted, jabbing a tiny finger at Mary's belly, which had only recently become visibly pregnant. "The baby's right there! We saw it on the machine at the doctor!"

"The baby can't open any presents yet, sweetie," Mary soothed. "It can't come out until late April or early May, remember?"

Dean's bottom lip quivered. "That's not fair!"

"Oh, honey," Mary explained, "they'll get lots of things before they arrive, I promise!"

Dean looked over at his modest pile of gifts and then walked over to retrieve a teddy bear that he handed to his mother. "For baby."

Mary felt tears well up and wasn't sure she could blame it all on hormones. "That's very nice of you, Dean!"

"Tell you what," John chimed in, "after we help your mom clean up in here, you and me can find your old crib in the garage, and you can help me put it together."

A short while later, Mary sat and watched her boys working on the crib. Dean knew the names of all the tools in the toolbox and was happy to help sort the different screws and other small parts into piles.

Mary had been nervous when she realized the year her second child would be born. Looking at this domestic scene, she felt a surge of protective feelings.

She rested a hand on her belly and spoke softly to the baby inside. "You're a very lucky baby! You've got a family, and a big brother in particular, that already love you so much." She felt an answering flutter under her hand and smiled.
