spn_bigpretzel John watched with a puzzled look on his face as his young son carefully placed box after box inside the shopping cart. He knew it couldn’t be easy since Dean was only 3 and barely tall enough to reach the cart, but somehow he managed without dropping any.
Finally, he was unable to contain his curiosity any longer. “Those are smokeless ash trays, son.”
Dean nodded his head as he placed another box in the cart.
John sighed and tried again. “I don’t smoke, Dean and neither does your Mom.
“I know.” Dean acknowledged before once more reaching for a box.
“Then why....”
Dean interrupted before he could finish. “Tommy said....”
John almost groaned out loud. Not another ‘Tommy said’ story. Almost since the day that kid had moved in across the street Dean had developed a case of hero worship. He couldn’t count the number of times that he and Mary had had to sit through a ‘Tommy said’ story. And he honestly didn’t know if he could do it again. But it looked as if he didn’t have a choice.
“Go on, son. What did Tommy say?”
“Tommy said that we had to have these because if a ghost got in the house then it would suck them up.” Dean’s eyes were wide with fear and conviction as he looked up at his Dad.
John ducked his head to hide the grin that threatened as he began placing the boxes back on the display.
“We don’t need these things, Dean.”
Dean desperately tried to keep his bottom lip from trembling as he watched his dad put the ashtrays back. “But Tommy said the ghosts will get us.”
John wanted to tell Dean that Tommy was just pulling his leg but at the look on his son’s face he knew he couldn’t do it. He couldn’t be the one to destroy the hero-worship his son felt for the older boy. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t be having a talk with Tommy’s father as soon as he could.
Without a word, John placed the boxes back into the shopping cart. Maybe ten ashtrays were a might much but if it made his son feel safe then he would buy out the whole store if he had too.
