Oh yeah, John found out, I forget where I read/heard/saw it, but Eric Kripke has said that John knew everything the whole Yellow Eyes/Lucifer plan, and everything that gets revealed to the boys up to the end of season 5, before he died, and well in my opinion that's why John lasted so long in hell and didn't break, I mean he was the most stubborn bastard anyway, but he knew that breaking and taking Alistair's deal would break the first seal, and that's why he didn't. So yeah he found out about Mary, I mean we know he looked into Yellow Eyes and all the folk he made a deal with around the same time he made the deal with Mary, and I'm willing to bet that he would have found out about all Mary's friends and family that got killed too. He's not the type to have left any stone unturned. And well I mean there was the whole telling Dean he might have to kill Sam business.

But yes absolutely, he'd be furious that they could have been taken preventative steps against the demon, and well also the fact that Mary could make a deal and then not try and figure out what the consequences were going to be.

I knew John knew about YED's plan for Sam, but didn't realise he knew about Mary , but as you said, he was very thorough and focused so he would've found out. It does make sense and yes, he would've been a real stubborn bastard in hell, knowing all he knew!
