Over the years, he’s held many a boy’s head, stroked many backs, and fought to ease many fevers and worse, but this is the first time he’s faced this illness. He strokes the hairy back beneath his hand, acutely aware of the small, delicate bones inside his young friend. Bob heaves, pants hard, heaves again, . . . but nothing new comes out.
“Ya done?”
Trying to answer, Bob’s head jerks back. His eyes go wide, and something small, furry, and utterly nasty shoots across the room.
“Balls!”
“I . . . I think that’s all.” Bob crashes onto the bed beneath Bobby’s hand. “Damn catnip.”

John steps up silently to see what his wife is staring at in their new kitchen. He wraps his arms around her from behind and pulls her close against him. “He’s going to be a regular Ringo Starr one day,” he comments, chuckling, watching their baby boy makes good use of a pot and wooden spoon to beat out a drumming rhythm.
He feels Mary’s beaming smile. “He already is a star.” She turns in his arms. “Just like his father.” Cupping her hands around his neck, she kisses him, long and sweet. Both wish the moment could last forever.
