I loved it, the whole thing. It was glorious, so moving, so scary, so tense and Sam was just incandescently wonderful, grey-faced and shaking and bleeding out and taking down monsters all the while. Oh my word.
Beautiful coda! Movingly symbolized all the depth of emotion from that episode.
"Staggering feat of his self-rescue"--it was even more staggering because he also rescued Dean in the end. I just loved that combination of Dean being protective but Sam being badass rather than a damsel in distress.

Yes, you're right - Sam the wounded hero is my absolute favourite PLUS extra bonus if we get protective!Dean as well. As amypond45 pointed out, we did see Sam self-rescue in 11x02 as well - curing himself and saving the other infected people in the hospital - but of course Dean didn't know what was going on in that ep so it lacked that last crucial tasty element...!
