The two eldest archangels don't really care about humans or Earth - the Apocalypse has nothing to do with either. All they really want is Gabriel's attention and love. They just have a rather confusing way of trying to get it.

In the beginning, God created two angels to watch over the world. These angels were to be equals but not equivalent. Michael and Lucifer bickered uncontrollably, and tore the world apart with their disagreements to such an extent that God created a wall around his garden to keep it safe. Then he created Gabriel, the angel of judgement. He was to be the voice of reason, to settle the petty arguments between Michael and Lucifer, and restore order

“So if you could just keep saying ‘no’,” Gabriel told them, “that would be really great.”
Sam and Dean stared flatly at the archangel. Dean raised an eyebrow. “So… all of those prophecies about Mikey and Luci walking the earth and bringing on the Apocalypse?”
“Look, the message I gave was that if Michael and Lucifer were ever reunited it would inevitably cause the end of the world. They will not rest until they have ruined everything with their tantrums.”
Sam frowned. “But, if they just want you to pick a favourite, could you just… pick one?”
Gabriel crossed his arms over his chest. “And what do you think the loser will do?”
“Well, okay, couldn’t you just hang out with both of them? Keep them busy?”
Gabriel scowled. “How about you two hang out with them and keep them busy, and I go back to not having to deal with this?”
Sam and Dean exchanged another look. “The way we see it,”
“This is all your fault.”
“And since this isn’t about killing humanity like every damn angel has told us

Okay, this is kind of gorgeous. :) I particularly like the effect of the slightly epic/biblical style in the first part, the change to the casual quibbling of the other two, and the way they still manage to fit together perfectly.
