Castiel sighed heavily... of course his brother was alive, and of course he wasn't helping... it was so Gabriel, he thought as he looked around the too brightly coloured fake world.
He frowned at Gabriel who was staring at him defiantly and apparently waiting for him to talk. Most likely just so he can refuse whatever Castiel was here for before sending him on his way.
"Sam Winchester is locked in Lucifer's cage with him and Michael." Was all he said, solemnly. He wasn't clueless, he knew that the only reason Gabriel had stood up to Lucifer in the first place was because of Sam Winchester. He seemed to have a taken a liking to the younger Winchester. Something that surprised Castiel but he couldn't judge, he felt something very similar he assumed for Dean Winchester. Or he had for a time. He realised it would never eventuate, and had since forgot his feelings.
Gabriel's eyes went wide and the last thing Castiel saw before he blinked out, was Gabriel's mouth opening to ask something, but it was too late. Cas was gone.
"You're welcome Biggin'" Gabriel cheered happily at a shocked and confused looking Sam. The sun was bright and shining down on them in stark contrast to what had been Sam's reality until a moment ago.
Sam for his part fell to the ground screaming, his head felt like it was on fire, the pain unbearable. He had no conscious thoughts, he was simply overwhelmed and over taken by memories of hell.
Where they memories though? Or was he still there, he couldn't tell, it didn't matter really, memories or not Sam was broken.
Gabriel frowned at him as he reached down and touched the boys forehead. He winced as he saw what was happening inside the hunters noggin'
"Jesus" he hissed as he concentrated his grace and used it to scrub hell from Sam's brain. Every last disgusting inch of it.
Sam gasped and then collapsed in a heap. Unknown to the man he didn't fall on the hard ground, instead onto a warm, soft bed. Gabriel clicking one into existence as the man fell.
He settled down next to gigantor, he knew the man would need to sleep, his mind might be clear now but his body had also been through a lot, it needed time to rest.
Two day's had past, Sam still hadn't moved from the bed, exhaustion wasn't even the word for it Gabriel summarized.
He spent his time watching Sam, wondering, in awe, at how this human had managed to not only stuff Lucifer back in his box, but also to lock Michael in there too. His brothers were powerful, so very powerful. The strength it must have taken Sam to defy Lucifer and take control... Well if he'd been impressed with Sam before, it was nothing to how he viewed him now.
Sam stirred on the bed and his eyes fluttered open.
"Hey there" Gabriel said softly with a smile.
Sam's eyes got wide as he stared at Gabriel... "You.. died" Sam whispered weakly.
"Yep" Gabriel replied with a small smile. "Well at least Lucy thinks I did. Happily though, I.. didn't!"
Sam blinked, not really understanding... well anything.
"I was... falling, Lucifer, was, he was inside of me, why aren't I dead? This can't be hell or you wouldn't be here... and, and..." he faded, and fell back on the bed squeezing his eyes shut.
"You were dead buddy" Gabriel said quietly, he smiled sadly. "I'm sorry I didn't get to you sooner, I have been... selfish. It wasn't till Cas told me what had happened that I even bothered to look." He sounded angry with himself.
"I pulled you out Sammy boy, out of the cage, out of the pit, you're alive again. I had to... erase some er things from your memory. Trust me Sam you didn't want to know what I took away. It was killing you. Literally."
"You saved me from hell?" Sam whispered, shocked. "Why? I didn't think you gave a damn."
"Yeah cause that's why I took on Lucy, because I didn't give a damn..." Gabriel snapped.
Sam looked suitably regretful, "Sorry" he mumbled.
"Anyway, couldn't just let my favourite human melt in hell with my bro's, so here we are."
"Why?" Sam asked again, "Why do you care about me?"
"Just be grateful and leave it alone Sam." Gabriel said as he stood up. "Have a good life oh giant one" he said with a wave, ready to blink away. He would have too only, he suddenly seemed to have a giant attached to his person.
"Erm... Sam?" He asked as the man clung to him.
"Thank you" Sam muttered into the angels neck. "I don't know why you did it but thank you. I.. I love you... have ever since your sorry ass gave me Dean back. Fucked up as it always seemed to me."
Sam's confession threw Gabriel, he hadn't been expecting it, certainly not the L word.
"Right um... well um..." Fuck it, he thought, words are totally over rated anyway.
So instead he turned his head, grabbed Sam's and kissed him softly but deeply on the lips. Smiling when Sam seemed to get even closer and started kissing him back. Small whimpering noises coming from the taller man.
"Love you too gigantor" Gabriel murmured when they finally parted.
