One of my favorite lines ever. I've heard it come up in conversations exactly twice. The first was by former California Gov Pete Wilson, speaking to a group of several thousand high school students. He was trying to get hip with the times by singing Chumbawumba before he telling us that when we "get knocked down, we get up again" because its "better than a sharp stick in the eye." By golly, he's right, everything IS better than a sharp stick in the eye.
Last Thursday my evil side convinced Jason to accompany me to Harrah's East Chicago, both of us fully knowing that the probability that he would lose money he couldn't afford to was a very likely outcome. While waiting for the $220 NL tourney, there was a long wait for the $5/$10 tables so I headed down for some exciting video poker! All jokes aside, I pushed max bet with my last $0.75 and hit the first 4 parts to a royal, with the king hitting on my one card draw. Now i've never had a royal in Hold'Em after years of hands, so I immediately jumped up looking for the nearest person to high five. Now let me tell you, 10:30am on a Thursday at the slot machine/video poker section of East Chicago, Indiana is not too hot of a spot. There was a decrepit old man about 10 rows down from me, and the only guy in the vicinity so I went over and screamed ROYAL FLUSH and tried to high five him. He eventually gave me a double high fives. We lamented that I didn't get the full prize because I didn't have the full $1.25 to bet, but he quickly reminded me, that once again, it was better than a sharp stick in the eye.
As per the actual poker thing. After slowing down at the start of the month and running bad one weekend (-$200), i've over tripled up the party account (+$1100) and finished up in each live session. This coincides well with over $2000 in credit debt and getting shafted from 5 days to 2 at work. It could have been a much sweeter month, had this guy not pulled a varkoni and sucked out on two q,10 hands where I was up 90/10 w/ 1 card left.
