Week 24 of Sketches: Kitri

Jun 13, 2010 09:58

This week's sketch is something that I started ages ago, right after I got my USB tablet last December. It turned out to be a much larger project than I expected, so I kept working on it in little bursts and then forgetting about it for a month or two at a time before coming back to it. But last night, I finally finished it.

This is a sketch based off a photograph of Lorena Feijoo (of the San Francisco Ballet) performing as Kitri in Don Quixote (the original photograph can be found here, if you're interested). This was really an exercise in using the gradient mesh tool; with the exception of the fan, the lace edgings, and the patterned overlays on the skirt, every single component of this image used gradient meshes. There were certain parts of this image that were much easier to do than others: the red and black gradients in the skirt were pretty easy, for example, but the face and hands were much more difficult. While I wish I'd gotten a little more detail in the face, overall I'm VERY happy with the way this one turned out.

Aside from frisbee, I'm not sure I've been up to that much that's interesting since I last posted... overall I've been feeling kind of "blah" this week. Not entirely sure why. But here's hoping next week will be a little more exciting/successful/productive/etc!

(Oh, and I've started planning out next week's sketch... which I think is going to be a self-portrait. Sort of. Maybe more of an autobiographical sketch in image form. Or photo essay. Or all of the above. This should be fun to do, but I'm not sure how it's going to turn out in the end... :-P)
