Yesterday was the most eyeopening experience of my life. For the past few months I have been participating in a group called Take Back the Night. Take Back the Night is an event held across the nation to support raped and abused women. Until last night I did not realize that the one in four statistic was so true. Call me naive, sheltered, whatever..I just never realized. The festival (which is a musical/art display before the actual march and speakout) was a lot of fun and I thought that would be the best part of the event. It was fun, I enjoyed all the bands that played, the people that came, etc. But the most eyeopening part was marching around the campus and town chanting for women's rights and everything and then going to the speak out. The speak out is the part of the event where we sit in rooms separated by gender and tell our stories. I did not have a story to tell, but I did speak. I was crying so hard. I am not a big crier (the last time I cried was the OC series finale...I am superficial, i know) but I cried for about 2 hours last night while listening to these stories. I learned a lot about people I have recently become friends with as well as learning a lot about people that I did not know. Everyone was so open. When I spoke I just gave words of encouragement to all the people in the room. They are all amazing and brave and even if I did not know their names I love them all.
The worst part about it is that a lot of them are graduating this year. I know so much about them and now they are leaving me. I still have 11 days left to spend with them which is amazing but it is going to end so soon.
/end reflective, sad talk
