As some of you know, my attention span has been hugely diminished for the last year or so and as a result I have found myself practically illiterate as far as reading fiction books is concerned. A week or two ago, I was inordinately pleased to stumble upon The Left Hand Of God by Paul Hoffman. I was drawn in from the first sentence. I finished reading it a moment ago. This is not a statement to be taken lightly. This is the first book I have read from beginning to end in nearly a year (in contrast with my previous habit of finishing over four books each month).
I am PISSED OFF.
Have any of you read this book? If so, please comment and tell me what the fuck this guy was thinking when he chose to end it there. There is no indication of there being a sequel written, or even being planned. I feel completely and utterly betrayed by the man I thought was going to become my new all-time favourite author. How could he write something so epically amazing, only to have it end like that? This guy is a fucking psychopath!
I read the final paragraph, said "WHAT THE FUCK" out loud to no-one, flipped past the 'acknowledgements' page at the end hoping that there was some kind of explanation, examined the inner-spine of the book to make sure that I wasn't somehow missing the real final page, and then I cried. I haven't cried from reading a book since I found out at like two o'clock in the morning that Sirius died when I'd done nothing but read that book that day, being the release day and all - and I attribute that as much to exhaustion as actual grief over the character. Before that, I'd never cried over a book. And this time, nobody important even died. It was just the whole fucking messed up unacceptableness of the thing! It's entirely inconceivable that a book could end this way!
All the way through the book I'd had that little voice in the back of my mind going "You know how this is going to end, don't you? This author is probably sick enough to actually do it!" but all the way through I steadfastly clung to the naive hope that no, the world does have some sort of fairness and order to it and no, not even a total demented psychopath such as Paul Hoffman could do such a thing, but HE FUCKING DID!!!
In other words, I freaking love this book and you should all go out and buy a copy and read it right now!!!
said the llama,
that. was. so. freaking. awesome.
