So for those of you that don't already know, I´M IN FUCKING MEXICO, and so far it has been amazing.
We´re staying in a small city in the southernmost state of mexico. Aka San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. So far it´s been a lot of fun, though admittedly quite a bit harder than i excpected. On the other hand, i´m picking up spanish like a mother fucker! During the day it´s pretty emotionally and intellectually intense - we usually have 2 or 3 conferences or outings in a day, which have ranged from Indigenous Peoples and Women´s cultural issues, to NAFTA issues, to studies of Zapatista Cultural Effects, to basic issues of poverty and disenfranchisement. Many of these discussions have been long and without our tanslator, Sarah, I would be completely lost because they are so complex to begin with!
Our house is so amazing. Every morning we wake up and cross the courtyard to go to the wash house, and over the gate (yes there is a high metal door because this is not always the safest of neighbourhoods) you can see mountain ranges and it overlooks the city.
Thus far the most memorable of our trips was going to a non-profit private school (i know that sounds ridiculous but they get international funding grants) and meeting all the kids there. We went for two days, the first to take a tour of the facilities, which are incredible. It´s a trades study facility, so the school has litterally been build by the students (carpentry students, glassworks students, ironworks students, textile... they make and sew everything there! really there´s a lot more but i don´t remember them..)
And more importantly the clubs are AWESOME. but more on that later i suppose; despite the fact that it´s 9:40 our time, (an hour behind toronto) it´s time for bed because we have a big day out at a Mayan Ruins site in a small village called Tonina! I am very excited.
I MISS YOU ALL :)
