192. Icon Progression 2019

2019 ResolutionsThe icon resolutions I made at the end of 2018, for 2019, were:
1. Keep trying to put the same effort into all my icons, not just the ones for (elite/competitive) challenges.
2. Keep practising the new skills (animation, text, composition) I’ve tried this year.
3. Try not to default to default style just to pop out an icon - experiment, take time, mix it up a bit more.
January
Most of my icons from this month were for contests (movieslims, the7days, capicontest) or some remakes for bestof_icons. I focused on cropping and negative space, plus some text work, and iconned quite a few smaller fandoms.

February
Again, I focused on negative space and close cropping, and also lighting and composition a bit. There was a very last-minute entry for a battle with nightbulbs and tinnny (and I hadn't seen most of the fandoms we iconned, so there were a lot of new fandoms for me). There were a few alternates for some Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life icons, plus I iconned a few period dramas like Medici: The Magnificent and The White Queen.

April
I iconned a lot of The Spanish Princess and Brooklyn Nine-Nine this month, mostly because after making the peach Holt icon from the titles I wanted to make other character title sequence icons, plus some more of Holt’s comedy t-shirts, and because I had recently watched The Spanish Princess and had loads of caps saved and wanted to use them .movlieslims R26 started and was for Black Panther so there were some for that too, and The Durrells was airing and I had recently rewatched it and saved a load of caps too and wanted to use them.

Some more MCU/DC icons for movieslims and tv_movie_icons, plus I had recently finished watching (and rewatching) Timeless and saved a load of caps.

There was a color_inspired challenge with a really pretty palette and I had some B99 caps saved. The Aquaman round at tv_movie_icons continued, and the movieslims Game of Thrones round started.

More icons for the movieslims GoT round where I tried to focus on text composition in particular, and somehow I got through to the finale round! I also tried to work on text composition for a capicontest challenge because it's something I struggle with and really want to improve on. I made a few B99 icons too because there are some great lines and I wanted to do even more text composition practice.

My only icons this month were stock ones from photos I had taken for the Weather challenge at your_favourites - I've taken so many weather-related photos over the past couple of years that I simply had to participate! I mostly focused on colouring and cropping.

Busiest month: April [35]
Quietest month: March, September November, December [0] (March was just busy getting ready to move offices and move across the country, September I was busy with RL and went on holiday, and November and December I was working abroad with very little internet access)

Main new fandoms: Marvel films (specifically Black Panther and Aquaman), The Spanish Princess, and Timeless.
Total number of icontests I placed in: 21 / 27 (including non-voting in total)
Biggest achievements/progress made/observations: I didn't get to make as many icons as I would have liked this year, mostly because real life took over and I moved jobs and then spent two months working abroad. Of the icons I did manage to make, there was quite a bit of focus on cropping and improving text work, as well as some negative space icons I am pretty proud of. I started iconning a few new fandoms, as well as some more stock icons, but I also returned to some fandoms I hadn't iconned in a while.
My personal favourites:
2020 Resolutions1. Try to keep up the text and composition progress I started making this year, especially with text, composition and things like animation.
2. Maybe actually try to start using the Photoshop CS4 I bought a couple of years ago but never installed...
3. Actively comment on people's entries, not just when I want to know what fandom their icon(s) are from!
