Casting the Light Fantastic

[Negi's out and about today, doing some spellwork in the park and trying to clear his mind a little. There was a lot of things he needed to think about as he worked on the basics of spells. Having set up a barrier, there's muted explosions happening in the corner of the sky as he fires spell after spell at it ( Read more... )

..... [ Well. That's interesting. He didn't realized that others - the caster most definitely didn't look like one of Terca Lumireis, or at least not one of Brave Vesperia - would have magic.

Then again, he's not completely sure why he thought they wouldn't have it.

He's just studying the explosions of magic in the sky, and the caster, from a slight distance behind. The magic.. felt different to him. This was interesting. ]

[Drawing on another flow, Negi fired ice arrows which shot up against the barrier he set up, and in a muted whump of an exploion, flecks of snow began to fall from the impact point as he lowered his hands with a sigh.]

[Looking over at his newest arrival, he waved.] Hello!

[ Ah. Snow. And that spell looked slightly familiar, in at least the shape it took.

Duke tilts his head at the wave and greeting. He doesn't answer it, really, but watches some more. ]

... How many elements are within your grasp?

How many? I can cast up to ten types of elemental spells. Darkness, light, fire, ice... but wind and thunder are my main types.

[ Two of those don't sound familiar. Although, the effects of water and wind mimic natural ice, and the same could be said of fire and wind creating lightning. ]

... Categorized differently than the spells of Terca Lumiries...

Your homeland I take it has various spells as well? [inquired Negi curiously.]

.... Duke. [ And a pause. Something that hadn't made sense to him. ]

... Is thunder in nature not the sound that accompanies the flash of lightning?

It is, but it's sort of the laymans term for lightning spells. The lightning element is a little hard to classify at times because it can be so flexible in nature.

.... [ Duke translates "laymans" to be "not mage". ]

... It would make sense, if inaccurate in most cases... [ Tempest most definitely used strikes of lightning, rather than the crash of thunder... Then again, Thunder Blade was made of lightning... He's over thinking this. ]

... Less to say, at the least... Perhaps that is why some spells are named...

That's right. The technical term is lightning of course, but people incorrectly use thunder to name spells at times. But it does help at least when they're working on various names. You can only use so many nouns.

... Or simply wish for something easier to say... Lightning Blade, Thunder Blade, one is easier to finish the incantation with... [ Not to mention Over Limit and no longer having to use an incantation. However.. ]

... That is a far better method. A target in the air... [ Not that many of his spells would go up quite so easily... ]

That's true. And I'm working on silent incantations at best.

[He blinks at that last bit.] Does your world have targeting issues?

Hmm. [ Silent incantations. He only has two of those, and they're not even fully silent. Another difference. ]

... In a way. Many spells are Area of Effect, many are tracking, and many ...fall. [ Well, at least many of his spells. ]

This way is better than a training dummy in a courtyard. Harder to miss and hit walls.

Ah, I've got many of those, but for the most part, our spells back home are directed by the user, either in a wide radius or upwards, downwards, whichever. Combat during flight is also a big point of it.
