I had hoped a city with as ridiculous a power as granting wishes would be able to relieve me of my boredom, but it appears not. Really, you all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Is it really so difficult to keep a single lady entertained? Truly, it is a pity ( Read more... )

"Every moment yields a new copy of who we are. There're infinite possibilities."

That's what some people think.

A new copy? I believe I would word it a bit differently, but I feel rather inclined to agree with it.

However, what do you think? Is it safe to assume you are not included within that "some people"?

Potential, alternate, whatever.

[To a degree he's witnessed some of this. On the other hand, there's a theory that was presented to him by someone from his own world that bothers him.]

...Depends.

If you took someone out of a moment and put them somewhere or sometime else at random, are they the same person as the one who continues down a linear path or someone else?

As far as I am concerned they are the same person. Perhaps they will become a different person than if they had never been placed elsewhere, but that is difficult to say for certain as well.

[Asch makes a considering sound in the back of his throat.]

There's more than one path, of that I have no doubt. The problem's where they end up.

Again, it is hard to say. Perhaps the paths will lead to the same destination, or perhaps they will go on completely separate journeys. Without a way to view them all simultaneously, it's all just conjecture.

[Which she had the power to, to be honest. But that was a bit different from this.]

If the paths all lead to the same conclusion, then free will is meaningless.

You believe so? It has been my personal experience that free will and determination can change a numerous amount of things. [a beat] Of course, I can only vouch for my own world. Perhaps yours works differently.

If you end up in the same place no matter what choices you make.

The only way those things would have any power, and the only way that change would be possible is if an opportunity for more than one outcome already existed.

Countless possibilities always exist, sometimes even leading to the creation of parallel worlds and timelines.

Have you witnessed this firsthand?

Yes, I have. [Though it's not exactly pleasant being able to.]

How? [He wants to know, not that he expects an answer.]

A position granted to me through the power of another. [She'll answer alright, but it's not like she'll be specific.]

[Well.]

[Not that he's unfamiliar with being granted powers through other beings or anything. If you want to call Lorelei a "being". Not at all.]

A birthright or something earned?

A little of both, I suppose.
