[Hey Splendor! As you're strolling down the main road connecting Metropolis and the Golden District you just might catch a glimpse of two figures in the distance. Standing on either side of the road opposite each other are two boys; one dressed head to toe in blue and the other dressed quite the same only in red. [Is this a fixture of the city? A guard of some kind? A toll road?

Actually, it doesn't matter regardless.]

Move.

[Oh yeah, just give him a second as he moves out of the way for you-- psyche. Waves his axe in your general direction totally unimpressed.]

No way. Not until you pay the toll.

You aren't anything special, others had to pay-- so you do too old man.

[ He wags his free hand, the other mimicking the same action as his brother with the axe. ]

Maybe we can give you a senior discount if you want.

By what authority.

[The axes and the dig in his direction are apparently equally unimpressive, though his look of displeasure turns a little more focused. Before? He was generally irritated. Now, his irritation has a specific outlet.]

[They haven't even gotten warmed up yet.]

Our authority-- the Hatter Family! [Yeah Splendor is just crawling with mafia by now.]

It's our job to guard the Hatter Territory so we can't just let you through.

[ Nodnodnod.]

It's true. If you wanna pass you have to make a tribute to the Hatter Family--! Or have Boss' approval!

[He shifts his weight a little and cocks his head in curiosity. Something bigger and more interesting then these pint-sized irritations? Yesplz.]

Then bring your boss.

[E-ehhh, side-glances at his brother. Yeah. . . ummm, there's a small problem with that.]

Boss doesn't want to see you. He's too busy!

[ Glancing right back over to his brother. ]

Yeah! You don't look important anyway!
Boss said that he only deals with important people!

Hnn.

[There's a distinctly interested lilt to the way he draws out the syllable, and the way they look between each other doesn't go unnoticed. For whatever reason, it seems they can't (or won't) bring their boss. Disappointing.]

So do I. [Which means he'll be walking ahead like those axes ain't no thing.]

Hey hey, where do you think you're going? We're important! Even more important! [All their boss ever does is sit around drinking tea and being mean to big-sis...]

Our job is important so we can't let you through, old man!

[Actually they only bother to do their jobs when they're bored enough but whatever, those axes aren't budging bro.]

We're double important! We're the bloody twins! You should take us more seriously!

[ WHY DO ADULTS DO THIS TO THEM!! DO THEY HAVE TO CHOP OFF A LIMB OR SOMETHING? ]

If you won't pay-- you have to play old man!

I have no time for children’s games.

[He eyes the axes and smiles very slightly and then--steps forward anyway and reaches out a hand like he's going to just shove one of those axes out of the way. He has places to be and no intentions to make a detour for this.]
