The values of want and need are distorted here.
[wut up, alpine district. the captain's at a higher altitude overlooking the city, a careful but brief hike up past the cabins. arms folding, cape flapping majestically in the wind...this is what people with capes do okay. that and i guess muse about things aloud in an attempt to prompt discussion and thought.
so we'll go with that:]
Unless there is a case to the contrary, all of the people now here can be sustained. All the physical needs are present. Air. Food, water. [a slight pause.] Community.
The things that are claimed as other needs that aren't here may not be needed at all. Just wants that the forces governing this place cannot be obliged to give. Perhaps not without an exchange. [another pause. setting that ominous thought aside--]
If there is actual need for drawing people here, it may be that simply doing so satisfies it. Or perhaps the presence of wills is what sustains this place entirely. The captives and the captor both receive their needs, but the wants remain unbalanced. Magic doesn't satisfy. At its barest, this place simply does more than any planet does: ensuring life can be sustained and sustaining it through intervention.
[a beat, surveying once again in silence.]
It feels as if the role of death is less valuable here.
