As promised, I've put together some tentative results based on the wishing experiment assisted by some of you. Thank you again to everyone who offered their assistance

I don't know what to tell you, Maka. I'm beginning to wonder now if I just imagined talking to him.
As for Medusa... I apologize. I thought I'd be able to pinpoint her location in a city like this where she can't run outside it's boundaries, but I've found no trace. It's inexcusable.
... It's all right, Kid-- I know you aren't making it up, but... This isn't like him at all, so maybe he just-- isn't around anymore.
[she's trying not to sound too disappointed by this, but it's fairly evident on her face]
You don't need to apologize for that, either. Besides, she probably knows we'd be keeping a lookout for her anyway and figured out a way to stay well hidden.
That's certainly possible. Even in the time I've been here, a large number of people have gone missing. And if Soul has returned home, he can tell Shibusen of our whereabouts and safety.
[she's quiet for a moment longer too, almost waiting for Kid to give in and believe her; his face isn't saying much, but Maka knows he isn't quite buying it.
and so she frowns, lowering her eyes off to the side.]
... Sorry, I guess it isn't.
[another beat, then,] Do you... ever feel like you're not strong enough for someone anymore?
[she's surprised to hear that-- Maka's always considered him to be a pretty strong person, even more so than her. but at least it means he understands.]
Maybe it was just the effects of the Book of Eibon, but... right before coming across that music box, I was almost ready to give up being his partner. I-- I don't want to give up on him anymore, but I'm still unsure-- am I worth being partners with a Deathscythe anymore?
... So to be honest, I was a little afraid of talking to him again.
[ the Book of Eibon? no, not the time to be asking about that at the moment, but he'll be keeping that in mind ]
Deathscythes don't make themselves, Maka. It's a partnership, and every weapon and meister pair that's achieved it has done so with both sides working for it. Soul didn't become a Deathscythe by himself with you just tagging along. You should give yourself more credit.
[ Kid thinks if anything, Maka's definitely the leader between the two. He wonders why it's so hard for her to trust in her own abilities? But then, that's part of what makes her Maka. ]
Do you think any of your friends would let that happen?
It's not stupid at all. At times I feel as though I'm holding Liz and Patty back. I wonder if I wasn't the one wielding them, would they have already been able to make each other Death Scythes?
[she says, like it explains everything; but immediately afterward she shakes her head again]
... I mean, they probably don't think that. I know what we remember between us is different, but ever since what happened back in Arachnaphobia's castle, they were really worried about you.
And yet you made Soul a Deathscythe before I could do the same for Liz and Patty, which makes you either an exceptional meister, or myself an inadequate reaper. Or perhaps it has nothing to do with it at all.
[ pause; suspicious ]
Wait, what happened at Arachnophobia's castle that they're worried about me?

[ he sees the look ] ... are you all right, Maka?

No, it's fine-- he's better off home, right? It's just as you said.

[ Kid doesn't need to think long about her question, he nods almost immediately ]
Yes. It's not a pleasant feeling.

[... is what she's convinced of, at any rate. that girl in the chapter of Envy said some things that hit her pretty hard.]

Sorry, I shouldn't be dumping all this on you... It's probably stupid of me to say.
