[When the last strains of music faded, Edel opened her eyes to find herself in a place she'd never seen before. She'd destroyed herself before coming here, she was certain of that. Yet this felt less like some form of afterlife and more like... a second chance ( Read more... )

Thank you. It is a way of thinking that comes naturally to me.

Do you like stories, ma'am?

I love them. They are very important things, after all.

They are. And books about history as well, yes? Those are a kind of story.

Yes, they are. Or you could even say that stories are the histories of places unknown to us.

[She ponders this and nods, though Edel can't see that.]

If this world exists, then maybe the worlds of other stories do, too.

Exactly. In the world I came from, stories and reality intermingled. One of those I knew there was a prince who had left the unfinished story he was in to pursue the monstrous Raven he fought there.

Oh, tell me more! That sounds wonderful.

About the prince, or about how stories and reality intermingled?

I'd like to hear both! [and then, more politely] If you have the time, of course.

Would you tell me about the prince first?

I don't have anything pressing to do at the moment, so I should be able to tell you about both. But you wished to hear of the prince first...

Even after they both had escaped the story, the Prince and the Raven continued to fight, yet neither could outmatch the other. Finally, the Prince used a forbidden power to shatter his own heart and seal away the Raven. But in shattering his own heart, the Prince lost the ability to feel any emotions, and the shards of his heart scattered over the town and were lost.

Princess Tutu saw how sad and lonely the Prince seemed without his heart, and decided to gather the shards of his heart and return them to him. But while Princess Tutu was blessed with beauty, cleverness, and strength, she was fated never to be with the Prince. If she ever confesses her love for him, she will turn into a speck of light and vanish. But even knowing her fate, she is still determined to help him, if only to be able to see him smile once his heart is whole again.

[Sara listens wordlessly as Edel tells the story. It's been so long since someone told her a story and not the other way around!]

That's beautiful! What happens next?
