[When the last strains of music faded, Edel opened her eyes to find herself in a place she'd never seen before. She'd destroyed herself before coming here, she was certain of that. Yet this felt less like some form of afterlife and more like... a second chance ( Read more... )

A very apt description. The city is named Splendor.

[She makes a note of the first two names, she's heard them before]

Splendor... That certainly seems fitting.

[This woman's voice is not one she is familiar with, so introducing herself seems in order.]

I am Edel. May I ask your name?

I am Yukari Yakumo. A pleasure, Miss Edel.

A pleasure to meet you as well, Yukari. Do you have any more knowledge of this place that you would like to share?

You were right that it is a city of potential. It is receptive to the wishes of those here.

Indeed? Then those here should be careful what they wish for. That sort of power shouldn't be taken lightly.

No it should not. It should help this city is said to be sentient.

A city that can think? This place becomes more intriguing all the time. But a check on whatever wishes those residing here choose to make is a good thing.

Oh it gets much better. This city can change in response to our collective wishes. We've only had one unusual event of this nature, but I think there might be more.

That sounds like... quite the interesting experience. I'm much more used to a setting that was under the control of a single individual. I will keep the possibility of it happening again in mind.

A single individual, you say? Would that be [she makes a guess] a story teller of some kind?

Yes. One whose writing could become real, who died and yet managed to keep writing still, making the town he lived in a place where stories and reality intermingled.

Have you perhaps spoken to someone from my world?

My my, but what sort of story is it?

I have encountered the second one you mentioned.

The story of a prince who fought against a monstrous raven, and shattered his own heart to seal it away. Drosselmeyer, the writer, wishes for it to end tragically. Those people who were placed in the major roles of the story wish otherwise. ...I will not get to see how it truly ends up finishing, unfortunately.

Fakir? I hope I will get to speak with him, then, if he is still in this city.

It's one thing to write a story, it's another to play it out in reality. Can you not see the ending because you know too much already?

Keep him from doing anything rash; the first person you mentioned - Miss Ahiru- was previously here, but seems to have vanished.

My ability to sense how the threads of a story will weave themselves is not so great as that. No, I... destroyed myself before being brought here, to save some of those wrapped up in the story from an ill fate. So if I am ever returned home, I'll likely become ashes once more.

[She makes a concerned frown at what Yukari says next.]

So I have just missed her, then. I will keep an eye on Fakir. He has never taken failure well.
