Character History:
Sumio comes from modern day Japan, and his life is pretty much ordinary, too. In his school he isn't anything outstandingly special, but he isn't lame enough to be the bad kind of special, either. He has friends and a loving mother, so there was nothing really dramatic going on in his life at first sight. However, three years ago, his father disappeared mysteriously, leaving only him and his mother, a very high-strung, when-there's-a-will-there's-a-way kind of woman, to their own devices. Since then, Sumio acquired a strange precognitive/oniromantic power that allows him to predict the future whenever he falls asleep.
But it's not revealed to him in dreams-- rather, when he gets one of his many sporadic spleeping spells, his left hand writes on its own, usually in hiragana, cryptic messages that predict the future in short sentences. His mother and friends all know about his ability, although it's not hard to see why since he falls asleep quite often and he can't help writing stuff up. Everyone seems used to it, and nobody really has any complaints about it.
One day while walking outside on a crowded street, he crosses paths with other students, all unaware of each other, and on a giant advertising screen, the image of a skull with the jaw facing backwards appears for a split second, although nobody but Sumio noticed-- or at least, not that he knew.
As soon as he gets home, he tells his mom about what happened in his day, reminiscing about his father and how he was just gone one day three years ago, meanwhile he nonchalantly draws the skull he saw earlier on in his notebook. His mother, usually chipper, loses her temper as soon as she sees this and starts screaming, saying "not you, too!" and being generally very upset. Confused, Sumio doesn't know what do, and gets another drowsy spell. When he wakes up, his notebook has a prediction written in it, saying that a woman he's familiar with, with long hair, was going to disappear in an elevator. Thinking it meant his childhood friend Shigeru, he rushes outside to find her, but when he does she tells him the elevator hasn't been working for awhile so she wasn't planning to go near it. This is when Sumio realizes that his mom wears a long wig to work, and he rushes over to find her. By the time he gets there, his mom had vanished into thin air inside the elevator, leaving only a dark silhouette behind. If it wasn't for the fact that a guard was there at the time too, nobody would have believed him, but still, his mom doesn't return.
Sumio goes into a rampage that required him to get hospitalized. He falls deeply asleep and wakes up 14 hours later... inside his school.
Six others are there, too, including Shigeru, and apparently everyone's last memories are about going to sleep. They all agree there's no way someone could have carried that many people inside a building at night without being seen, but they have no leads to go with for now. Suddenly, in a screen in front of them, the skull image appears again, calling itself "enigme", and saying that there's no need to worry because they'll all be able to go out soon if they find the keys hidden inside the school building. It claims that all these keys are impossible to find for ordinary people, but not for those who stand there and all their unique abilities.
As time moves forward in the race to find the keys, they're faced with life or death ordeals often, and slowly they start to discover each other's special psychic abilities.
Personality:
Sumio is your average narcoleptic teenage boy with green hair. a typical Shounen Jump hero in many aspects, but just different enough to stand out.
Energetic and more than a little goofy, his "Dream Diary" ability that lets him unconsciously predict the future has made him paranoid about letting it decide his fate, striving to change anything it establishes as the future and write his own destiny instead. He has a strong belief in fate, though, which leads him to ask every girl he meets under special or different circumstances to marry him, but claiming that if the Dream diary told him his fated person was a guy, he'd definitely change it to his convenience.
Sumio is also pretty brave, and whenever he gets a prediction about someone getting hurt, regardless if he knows the person or not, he'd rush towards the scene and stop it from happening, sometimes even violently. He doesn't go looking for trouble carelessly though, which keeps him low under the radar of other students.
He loves his mother a lot, being his only family at the moment, and because of her personality they're more like good friends than mother and son. When he's dragged into the challenging puzzle games of enigme, it's no surprise that the prize enigme promised to give him in exchange for solving the riddles and obtaining the keys was his mother. He was genuinely shocked when she saw the skull drawing and completely flipped, saying she couldn't elaborate but that there was a monster inside of Sumio now. He was even more shocked and confused when she was taken from him, so much in fact that he ended up in the hospital, and the guards said he was berserk and that it took a while to calm him down.
Yet even under these delicate circumstances, his heroic side shines through when he assumes the role of the calm man under the pressure of finding the keys once the enigme game starts rolling. There's a key for each person trapped in there which means they can technically all go out, but the keys can't be obtained without the help of each other's supernatural abilities. Sumio doesn't show an inch of selfishness at this time, even though he could since he can predict the near future and maybe find the keys on his own if he tried, and even get to his mother sooner, but instead he says he'll make sure the complete set of keys is found so they can all escape together.
When it comes to intimacy, he's still pretty childish. He thinks it's completely normal to take the hands of the girls he thinks he's fated to meet-- which normally means everyone ever because hey, who knows, the girl he just passed by might be the one!-- and ask them to marry him just like that. However, he's quite oblivious to Shigeru's advances and obvious romantic interest in him, like when she says she let her hair long because she heard he liked girls like that, and he just nods and runs off to follow a girl and propose.
He has a strong sense of protection and duty, and it shows in his often concern for the two girls that got trapped with him and the others in the building. He has taken it upon himself to watch over Shigeru since she claims to not have any powers at all unlike the rest, and he's also quite protective of Hasekura Moto, the jittery boy with the power to disappear things and disappear himself, so maybe it's those who look helpless and unprotected what triggers this sense the most, but his resolve to find the keys and let everyone out is still there, even with shady people like Sudou Takemaru in the group.
It's not explicitly a rivalry, but he occasionally ends up in awkward positions with the president of the student council, Matsurugi Jirou, who is also trapped in there with the others because of his unnatural ability to subtract numbers from nature. Matsurugi's personality is calm and strict, but his heart is in the right place-- that place being usually the same as Sumio's, which is the only reason they seem to agree on a lot of stuff, even though their attitudes about it are quite different. While Sumio is headstrong, dedicated, and more often than not, reckless, Matsurugi is completely okay with being sacrificed for the good of the team, instead of thinking of himself as a valuable part in it.
Although he can be loud, Sumio's usually just bouncy but he can understand when he needs to pipe down. And although his power is supernatural, he has adapted with it quite well to his normal life that he doesn't see it as something strange anymore-- however, when he faces the "shadows" inside the building, he tends to go look curiously, despite the danger involved.

[ standing in front of the golden entrance, sumio turns his face all the way up to the pretty, obscenely shiny decorations, eyes wide open and mouth gapping wide. he probably looks quite ridiculous right now, and the polka dot vest he's wearing is not helping in the slightest. he's holding the seal in his hand, turning it around absently, and for those lucky enough to not be around and look at his face right now, a surprised, quasi-whispering voice comes from the seal. ]
Oh, man. I died, didn't I?
[ there was clearly no other explanation. first he gets locked up inside his school with six other persons, one of them being a traitor, a bunch of beings called shadows who make people disappear-- then suddenly, a music box and another narcoleptic spell and next thing he knows he's here, in this... what is this? a dance hall? ]
. . . no. Wait. This is just another trap, isn't it?
[ he pulls his head back down, voice raising and brow quite furrowed. ]
. . . Keh! I knew it!
[ runs a few feet forward, lifting his arms and yelling at the celling ]
Enigme, Show yourself, I know you're there!! Where's Shigeru and the others!?
. . .
. . .
[ nothing. ]
Answer me!!
