for one, new picture:
for two, meme-time.
ganked from
frappeprobably going to be rather long, as I'm looking for something to occupy my time
1. What bill do you hate paying the most?
College tuition. Every time I see those numbers, I sit down and have a big, long "is Sarah Lawrence really worth enough money to buy a house with" pondering session.
2. What's the best place to eat a romantic dinner?
it depends entirely on the day and the person with whom I am eating.
With some people, a beautiful, extravagant restaurant is perfect.
and with others (these people are my favorites), nothing is better than a random and/or spontaneous picnic thingy on a rock/beach/chunk of organic matter in a lovely, outside-type setting.
3. Last time you puked?
two days ago. don't really want to think about it.
4. When is the last time you got drunk and danced on a bar?
got drunk - two years ago. twas an experience, let me tell you.
danced on a bar - never, sadly.
both simultaneously - never.
5. Name of your first grade teacher?
Mr. Bahrt. It takes a special kind of person to take on the task of introducing a group of Alaskan children (who are the most energetic, insane five-year-olds on the face of the planet. trust me, I was one) to the educational experience. Oh, the stories...
6. What would you really rather be doing right now?
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure.
depends on whether you're talking about the immediate now
or the attending-college now.
as far as the former is concerned, there are a great many things I would rather be doing than convalescing. Reading Dawkins' The Blind Watchmaker, travelling in the direction of the Pacific Northwest, spending a few days in the desert, playing on sand dunes, eating solid food without feeling as though I was going to regurgitate it fifteen minutes later; the list goes on and on.
as for the latter, I'm pretty okay with the going-to-college thing. Sure, there are things that, in a world where I didn't have to grow up and start looking to the future, I would like to take some time off to do.
I still haven't been to Europe, for one.
I haven't learned how to make dichroic glass, for two.
Every now and again, I begin to wanderlust
but I lived the gypsy-life for quite a while, and had my fair share of excellent experiences.
and I find the things I'm doing now to be equally satisfying in different ways.
I need the stability, need to get some kind of idea as to what I'd like to do with my life, and the place I'm in right now is conducive (I can never remember exactly how to spell that word) to those ends.
7. What did you want to be when you were growing up?
astronaut, author, bunny rabbit, chemist, alchemist, rockstar, Willy Wonka, arabic interpreter, psychologist, psychopharmacologist, genetic counselor, linguist, evolutionary biologist
8. How many colleges did you attend?
only one, thus far.
9. Why did you wear the shirt that you have on right now?
PirateMod "Fer the Pirate in Yer Soul" tank top.
cause it's comfy, and doesn't cover too much skin.
that, and it involves pirates. I'm always up for wearing something involving pirates (except for an actual pirate. that might be a touch awkward).
10. GAS PRICES! First thought?
bweh.
11. If you could move anywhere and take someone with you...
Scotland. I would move to Scotland and either
a. usurp one of those delightful old castles, amass a fleet of longships, and take to staggering around gesticulating wildly with a leg of mutton
b. find a lovely little cottage outside of a lovely little town on the side of a hill overlooking the sea, acquire a typewriter or twenty, as well as some bookshelves and the tomes necessary to fill them; and spend a year or two reading, writing, and acquiring an outrageous accent.
12. First thought when the alarm went off this morning?
Why doesn't my head feel like it's going to explode?
followed shortly after by
Why am I awake at eight a.m. on vacation?
13. Last thought before going to sleep last night?
I don't remember the specific thought, I'm afraid
or the subject matter
it probably had something to do with cozy and snuggly and bed
14. Favorite style of underwear?
as far as color is concerned, I prefer my underwear to be black; I find it to be elegant and sexy. I also enjoy red undies.
I'm a big fan of thongs and v-strings, with an occasional pair of lacy boyshorts on the side.
Up until I was about fifteen, I detested the blasted things, and vowed never to wear them.
After a year or two of pestering, my friend Erin gave me one convinced me to wear it. Took about a week to get used to them, and I never looked back - having underwear on that covers my butt annoys me (although I'm training myself to get used to full-bottomed panties again; makes pantslessness around people a lot less awkward).
15. Favorite style of underwear for the opposite sex?
I find men's underwear to be amusing, at best. 's one of those funny things that isn't meant to be terribly attractive.
better if they just wear nothing and call it good.
with that said, I am rather ridiculously fond of obnoxiously patterned boxers. it always makes me happy when someone I'm around takes off his pants, revealing a pair of Darth Vader boxers that say "DARK SIDE" on the ass (pantslessness in general makes me happy enough as it is. but we already knew that, didn't we?)
Briefs and other close-fitting underwear just look funny.
leave the skin-tight skivvies to those of us without the dangly appendages, eh?
16. What errand/chore do you despise?
vacuuming. Sweet fecking christ, vacuuming.
*squirms*
YEESH.
17. If you didn't have to work, would you volunteer at an art gallery?
Probably not, if only because I grew up in one.
18. Get up early or sleep in?
depends entirely on the day.
I enjoy waking up early - the day feels so much longer, I can get so much more accomplished.
I enjoy sleeping in. sleep is good.
20. Favorite NON sexual thing to do at night with a girl/guy?
I love a good gallivant...
walking, talking (heavy emphasis on the talking; about anything and everything), climbing trees, prancing, enjoying the company of someone I'm fond of...
*smiles happily just thinking about it*
21. A secret that you wouldn't mind everyone knowing?
all the secrets that I don't mind everyone knowing are out there in the open already (although they may not be common knowledge), and are thus no longer secrets.
here's a former secret: I have a serious fondness for the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync.
and "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees.
22. When did you first start feeling old?
when I was seventeen, I had some twinges.
I've had them off and on since then
my up-and-coming twentieth birthday gives me the willies
not because it means I'm old
but because it means that I've been kicking around for two decades now.
's a big landmark.
23. Favorite 80's movie?
Real Genius (who doesn't heart toxic waste? and Val Kilmer in his boxers, for that matter)
followed closely by
Weird Science
The Breakfast Club
Sixteen Candles
Pretty In Pink
No Small Affair
24. Your favorite lunch meat?
I'm a big fan of salami.
don't laugh.
you just laughed, didn't you?
get your mind out of the gutter
useless wassocks, the lot of you.
25. What do you get every time you go into Costco?
I'm not fond of Costco. The last time I went there, I walked in looking for a phone, and walked out with a nemesis.
blasted magenta Razr.
26. Beach or lake?
there are plenty of both where I'm from
and I miss them muchly.
there's really nothing like piloting a boat through the Alaskan ocean on a beautiful summer day to a beach that looks like a slice of misplaced caribbean.
there's also nothing quite like canoeing on a lake, surrounded by 3,000 foot peaks, looking down into the water at a boulder field ten feet beneath the surface
good memories.
27. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual that was invented by people who died at 20?
by no means.
my views on this subject are somewhat convoluted, and not really the kind of thing that can be comfortably explained in a paragraph or two or five.
28. Who do you stalk on MySpace?
nobody. I despise MySpace.
if I didn't loathe MySpace, though, I would stalk Liana.
29. Favorite guilty pleasure?
those of a musical nature
and Maya Gold chocolate.
30. Favorite movie you wouldn't want anyone to find out about?
I tend not to have guilty-pleasure movies, as I have no sense of film-snobbery whatsoever.
took me a bit to think of a movie that I'm actually ashamed to admit to liking.
finally came up with one, though: Showgirls.
31. What's your drink?
can't drink anymore.
when I could, I didn't drink much. had too much regard for my grey matter.
I miss being able to, though, if only as an every-now-and-again kind of thing.
my drinks of choice were (in order of preference)
straight Tequila [or, as my mother calls it, Te-kill-ya]
Envy
Bailey's Irish Cream
peppermint schnapps
150 proof dark rum - it was my first drink, and I've always had a fondness for the memories involved, no matter how disgusting I found the stuff.
Also, it made me feel very, very warm and fuzzy.
32. Cowboys or Indians?
Cowboys make me think of that cowboy ice-skating thing that my kat-twin linked me to last year.
I can't get past the mental pictures.
33. Cops or Robbers?
Broken down into an ideological debate... not going there.
in terms of the games I used to play with Greg Horton et al. when I was little that involved sticks, mud, subterfuge, and trampolines - Robbers.
34. Who from high school would you like to run into?
There are quite a few people I'd like to see again
Emily Corso, definitely - lucky thing got a full-ride scholarship to Reed.
it would be nice to see Noah, Greg, Skye, Tyler and Chandler again, too.
35. What radio station is your car radio tuned to right now?
I no longer have a car
my parents finagled me out of it.
and by finagled I mean paid me a good sum of money; I'm just bitter because I miss my first vehicle.
36. Norm or Cliff?
I don't get this question. which makes me feel kinda stupid.
37. The Cosby Show or the Simpsons?
the Simpsons.
38. Worst relationship mistake that you wish you could take back?
I tend to shy from considering the decisions I've made mistakes, as I've learned immensely important, necessary lessons from them that probably would not have come about until much later, if ever, had I done things differently.
Despite this, there are a few actions I've taken that I consider mistakes; the one that has had the deepest impact on the overall direction of my life, both positively and negatively is most definitely the Jeff debacle.
The biggest mistake I've made, though, doesn't have as much to do with an individual situation as my approach to relationships in general.
My first boyfriend Noah and I had a discussion last year in which we finally got around to hashing out a number of things that had not been resolved in the three years that had passed since we broke up. Of everything that was said, the most valuable to me went something like this:
"The problem wasn't lack of love; far from it, I loved you very much. However, when you're in love with someone who wants to be someone else, it's a tough situation to be in. You were willing to be anything I wanted you to be, but you never realized that I just wanted you to be yourself."
I spent a good portion of my life far too willing to shift and change myself in order to become what I thought people wanted me to be (and thus gain/keep their love). In addition, when things between someone else and I begin to fall apart, I tend to blame myself more than I should; and then attempt to change myself in order to correct the problems.
I've found that this approach tends to cause more problems than it solves.
no more of that.
39. Do you like the person who sits directly across from you at work?
by work you mean school.
and the people who sit directly across from me in class tend to shift from day to day.
I don't have a problem with anyone in any of my classes, come to think of it...
even Josh Mosh has turned out to be a somewhat decent sort.
40. If you could get away with it, who would you kill?
I can't really think of anyone I would bring death upon, given the choice.
There are a few individuals upon whom I would wish a very nasty mauling, but nobody kill-worthy comes to mind.
41. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?
alive famous person or dead famous person?
either way, there are far too many possible answers to this question.
42. What famous person would you like to sleep with?
I would ask the alive or dead question here, but necrophilia really isn't my thing.
hmmm...
I would like to sleep with Kate Winslet or Scarlett Johansson
I would like to bang the lead singer of Rammstein through the nearest vaguely flat, stable surface.
same would go for the lead singer of Mindless Self Indulgence, were he not such a disease-ridden manwhore.
and I would also like to have my way with Richard Feynman's brain.
43. Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its intended purpose?
[my father, after reading this question over my shoulder]: "Yeah, to blow the fleas out of my hair."
this question is based on a very flawed premise: that fire extinguishers are intended for the purpose of extinguishing fires. Clearly, they are not.
their true purpose is to fall off the wall in the middle of the night during really good dreams, giving you a profoundly unpleasant start and interrupting whatever lovely things you were up to behind your eyelids.
or bludgeoning miscreants.
44. Last book you read for real?
Because it is now break, I have lots of free time, and I'm using it to read as many books as possible.
I finished Douglas Adams' The Salmon of Doubt today
and The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey a few days ago
up next: Stranger in a Strange Land.
45. Do you have a teddy bear?
I have multiple teddy bears.
my prized stuffed animal is Big Bear, whom I have owned since I was born [Happy Bear is pretty high up there, too] - I don't have him with me at Sarah Lawrence because I value him too much to risk losing him.
the stuffed animal I sleep with every night is a bright pink camouflage frog with big green eyes whom I have dubbed Hubert. He's supposed to be Liza's and my child, but she hasn't stopped by to see him in a while. typical deadbeat dad, that Liza.
47. So, where in California have you never been and would like to go?
I've never been to San Francisco. this needs to change.
I actually haven't spent much time in any part of Northern California - drove through it once, when I was younger
48. Number of texts in a day?
I don't send many text messages anymore.
one, maybe.
49. At this point in your life would you rather start a new career or relationship?
My life at this point is oriented more in the career direction; I'm in school to hone my ideas of what I want to do with my life and accumulate knowledge along the way. Relationship-type stuff has proven to be quite the distraction, amounting almost to an obstacle in certain cases.
it would be a lie, though, to say that I don't want a relationship on some level or another. I'm not going to seek one out, but were the opportunity to have one to come along, I'd at least consider the possibility.
as far as what's best for me and what is necessary, I'd say the new career.
as far as what I would like to have, it's up in the air.
50. Do you go to church?
no.
I'm more a spiritual person than a religious one, if that makes any sense.
51. Pencil or pen?
pencils tend to be too smeary for my liking - they don't last too terribly long; if I'm journaling I like to write in pen. Pigma Micron OO1, to be precise.
when I'm arting or taking notes on something I know I'll need to be revising, I prefer graphite to ink.
52. Bueller??? Bueller??? Bueller???
good movie, cute message.
I found his voice quite impressive.
I'd rather watch Real Genius.
53. How many jobs have you had?
I've only had one consistently paying job - I worked in a welding shop for about five months when I was seventeen.
I've had numerous volunteer jobs, the most notable of which was an on-again off-again four-year stint at the local veterinary clinic. I really should get around to compiling all the fantastic stories I have from those times I spent with Burgess.
54. What do you want to achieve in life?
oh, bugger.
however much I could write on this subject, it would all boil down to a few key things:
1. to maintain the serenity I've found within myself over the last few years, to further build on that, and to eventually find true, or at least some semblance of, balance.
2. to do the most good, and touch as many people, as possible
3. to finally sort out, from all my interests and talents, a vocation/career that would keep me engaged and interested.
4. genuine contentment; with a family of ferrets to call my own.
