Have seen the new Conan film. It was research, I swear. Not that that made it good. I am also angry that people who clearly know nothing about Howard's actual stories keep saying that this one is "a return to the grittiness of the originals" or whatever that phrase is, that they keep using. Howard's stories are full of warfare and sometimes snake people, yes, but they are also thoughtful, about the nature of life, the problems of kingship (and giving it up), the point of battle (what do you fight for?), the seductive glitter of swords in sunlight, the fading of the last frontiers, and the fact that sometimes you can't save everyone, even if you try. Someone needs to make that movie.
We also went to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes, because the Future In-Laws wanted to go see a movie on Sunday. It was pretty good, actually. Kind of made up for Conan. And there was Draco Malfoy Tom Felton, and he got to say The Line (you know the one). So overall, totally worth it. I'm sitting at the computer waiting for my students to email in their final papers. They're due by midnight. I have three so far...
