I have a tribble signed by David Gerrold! And also some books.
To recap: we found out, literally the day before, that he was going to be speaking/signing here in Riverside. (This whole event was sadly under-publicized; I only knew about it via Mr Gerrold's Facebook reminder post.) So I grabbed the books of his that I have here, and the tribble that was a gift from the fiance, plus the fiance himself, and we cut short other weekend plans to run over there.
I'm so happy we did. He's a very friendly, funny, genuinely sweet man who will happily answer audience questions (including mine, about his favorite Trek episodes [other than his own: 'A Taste of Armageddon,' 'Journey to Babel,' 'The Galileo Seven,' 'Mirror, Mirror,' and 'The Apple,' which was greeted with good-natured laughter]). He talked about his Trek experiences, and the reason he left Next Generation, over the refusal to treat gay characters in the storyline--he's obviously passionate about the causes and people he loves, and encouraged everyone to try to make a difference, even through something as simple as recycling. He happily signed and drew tribbles on two of my books (and one for someone else) and we talked a little bit about his liking for Terry Pratchett (his favorite is Monstrous Regiment; mine's Night Watch; but we both like Commander Vimes). Later, when he wasn't very busy, I wandered back over and said, "I was trying to figure out if there was any way you could possibly sign a tribble..." and he took it, looked around until he found the tag, and signed on that.
David Gerrold is a good guy. That's the kind of person who should be writing Star Trek, and SF generally--someone smart, thoughtful, passionate about using the story to say something important, but never forgetting the importance of good storytelling in the message.
It was definitely a good day. I wish the publicity had been better--the signing line had dissipated before the event was even over, which was a little sad--he pulled out his laptop and started doing work. And I know more people who would have wanted to come, if they'd known this was going on.
But still a good day--I've got a signed tribble!
awesomeness,
