Today, the Mellon Workshop on Medieval Cultures & Postmodern Legacies held a talk by Seth Lerer (if you are interested in academic studies of medievalism, children's literature, storytelling, or magic, you should read his books), and then we got to have dinner with him. He's a great speaker, very energetic and fluid, and makes connections between things you would never think of (children's marginalia in copies of the Canterbury Tales--->the Potions textbook from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, for example). And at dinner I talked to him for a while about my research and the Welsh myth book and my tentative dissertation topic...and he said he'd be interested in being an extra reader, if I want one, because it sounds like an interesting topic!
Very cool.
Now off to study for PhD exam #3 tomorrow.
