First, for our annual graduate student conference here at UC Riverside. This year's theme is 'States of Crisis;' this is the 17th annual conference, and we have a long and proud history--international participants from the UK, Germany, Canada...two years ago we were the largest graduate student conference in the USA, which may or may not be true any longer. It's always worthwhile, especially for relatively new grad students who want some practice presenting papers. Submit abstracts (any areas related to the arts, humanities, or social sciences) to disjunctions2010@gmail.com for the general call for papers. My specific areas: Renaissance Literature, Law & the Outlaw, Tolkien & Inheritors, Folklore & Mythology. Send paper proposals in those areas directly to me.
Second, CFP for a friend: The Dark Knight of the Academy: Why Batman Matters, July 16-18, Henderson State, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Submission deadline May 1, 2010.
Submit abstracts/papers dealing with any topic related to Batman (film, graphic novels, cartoons, etc): hsuphilosophy@gmail.com. Kevin Durand and the rest of the Henderson State gang are great fun to hang out with, and also dedicated to taking the study of popular culture seriously. Send them something. We'll have a good time.

It's raining, which is lovely. I am still working on several projects, namely an essay about Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, the introduction for our Welsh myth book, revisions on an article about Terry Pratchett and Shakespeare for the Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts, and my PhD reading lists. Oh, and my own abstract for the above Batman conference. Something about heroism, storytelling, and Neil Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" Hmm, that's a lot; I suppose I should get back to work...
