So hey, I totally bailed on both my daily writing goal and Holidailies, but it was for a good cause - with one last push I finished my reading goal of 75 books for 2011! Exceeded it even, by three.
Here's the complete list at Goodreads:
http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/756436-julie-w?read_at=2011. Only four of those were re-reads - I had an early year re-read of Bujold's Cordelia's Honor, and I felt the need to re-read the first three Pern books when McCaffrey died. Otherwise, a lot of YA, paranormal romance and fantasy this year.
The standouts this year were:
The Snow Queen's Shadow by Jim Hines. Final book in his Princess series. Great women characters.
Rampant and Ascendent by Diana Peterfreund. Killer unicorns! Unicorn slayers! Fascinating and complex takes on virginity!
The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. Especially The King of Attolia.
Coronets and Steel by Sherwood Smith. LOVE!
Fire by Kristin Cashore. I bounced hard off the end of Graceling, but OMG loved Fire.
The Broken Kingdoms and The Kingdom of the Gods by N. K. Jemisin. Excellent followups to the most excellent 100,000 Kingdoms.
Feed by Mira Grant. Yeah. Awesome. Another top five fave.
The Alchemists of Kush by Minister Faust. Stunning. Def top five.
Kat, Incorrigible by Stephanie Burgis. Utterly adorable
Zoo City by Lauren Beukes. Fabulous.
The Princess Curse by Merrie Haskell. And not just because I'm in the acknowledgements.
The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. Excellent and complex YA fantasy.
The Tobey Daye series by Seanen McGuire. Inhaled the whole thing in like a week.
Paranormalcy by Kiersten White. Utterly fun and subtly smart YA paranormal romance with a charming and refreshing realistic and down-to-earth teenage romance. Top five!
Cold Magic by Kate Elliot. Delicious epic fantasy.
Soulless (and the rest of the series) by Gail Carriger. Awesome Victorian steampunk paranormal Regency romance. Excellent worldbuilding. Top five!
I also read 113 short stories. Would have read more, but it turns out trying to read 75 books when you have a full time job and a toddler sucks up all your spare time, including lunch and breaks, which are my usual short story reading times. You can see links to those here, below the book list. http://feralwriters.com/log.html
For 2012, I'm going to take it easy on the book goal, only 50, and try to hit 200 short stories. I just subscribed to Clarkesworld and Lightspeed magazines on the Kindle, and I have a backlog of Daily Science Fiction stuff.
