I am beyond appalled at the epic and escalating levels of fail coming out of the latest round of debates on writing, racism, Othering and cultural appropriation. rydra-wong has roundups here, here, here, here, here, and hereHere's the thing, fellow white people. It's simple. Don't be an asshole. And if you decide you need to be as asshole, own it.

I think my favorite part is where the people of color need the white person to give them permission and show them how to do something to speak out against racism.

And where the people of color just aren't smart enough or properly trained in literary criticism to be allowed to have opinions.

I mean, there's been a lot of not-fail and a lot of good stuff said too (and the remyth project is amazing) but...the fail is staggering.

[it always seems to happen - the discussion starts our relatively calm and level-headed and then continues and then suddenly the privileged group snaps and there is MASSIVE FAIL. Just once if we can have this type of conversation with that....maybe it would be a sign of taking a babystep in the right direction]

And now even though you have to read a whole book to comment intelligently on it and have your interpretation taken seriously, apparently having to read up and understand the context of an lj post about a topic to comment intelligently on it and have your interpretation taken seriously is just ridiculous and way too much to ask.
