Things that will make me immediately backbutton on a Pepper/Tony fic: a flip reference to Pepper filing harassment suits against Tony. Sexual harassment? NOT ROMANTIC.
Speaking of the P/T, I have also read some spectacular holding-chapters-hostage-for-reviews lately. The best was, and I only lightly paraphrase, "Give reviews or I'm done writing for this year, and THAT WOULDN'T BE SO GOOD FOR YOU."
Oh, fandom.
And on that note, but not really, thank you all so much for the lovely comments on my post about Paradox. I made the mistake of reading them the next morning at work and blubbering all over my keyboard, but it was really just what I needed. I'll try to respond individually soon, but works about to eat my head again for another couple of weeks and it may take me a while. But that? That is why I love fandom.
And on that note, more directly, there's been a Top Five Fannish Moments meme wandering around, and in the spirit of preparing to Take Back the Glee in 2009 (see
stargazercmc), here's mine.
1. The day I found my very first fic recced by one of my favorite authors. I was reading her journal, and she's all, "Hey, this is a good story," and I was all, "Oh yay, new fic *click* OMFG THAT'S MY FIC OMG *flail*."
Not only was it a huge egoboo for a very fledgling SG-1 fan who was a little lot terrified of making a fool of herself in the very new-to-her world of online fandom, but it led to me finding my very first group of fannish friends, and that was my gateway into the community that I now happily call home.
2. The day I made
this post. Oh, how I had no idea what I was getting myself into with the newsletter. And here it is two and a half years later and it's still going strong and evolving and representing (I hope) the full spectrum of SG-1 fandom on lj, and has brought more awesome fans into my life and has become completely intertwined with my fannish experience.
And while it does drive me crazy sometimes (I will never run a newsletter during a US presidential election EVER AGAIN, frex) and eats up most of my fannish time, it's a labor of love that I still love with all my heart and am so very proud of.
3. DragonCon 2007. My first DragonCon, my first big media con and meeting everyone I'd only known online, some barely, and coming out of it with a whole new group of awesome friends, awesome women who are strong and smart and funny and the whole experience of sharing this overwhelming party of fannish excess with these wonderful women who understood why it was all so awesome… The Dawn pageant and the ponies and... Yeah. (And there's Weinercon and the weinermenagerie and the penguin jokes and the licking and the snark and drunk!
mrv3000 mocking, and the first SqueeCon and the fangirl slumber party and
woodface coming from overseas and calling
stars-like-dust in Australia on my crappy cell phone and
besyd's head injury and
lytarules's penis pancakes...).
4. Watching ”Threads" in chat with a handful of my favorite people. That episode was the beginning of the end of my show and it tickles me to this day that the final scene gave me the ending I had always wanted, like the writers had read my mind. To share that with people who loved the show as much as I did, with whom I'd shared three years of hilarity and outrage and squee was something I'll never forget.
5. Sitting in a hotel room at DragonCon 2008 with
holdoutrout,
besyd,
ultranos-fic and
vickyocean watching a crappy pay-perview showing of Iron Man on the crappy hotel tv, and getting to share a shiny new fandom with awesome old friends and great new friends (and a lot of alcohol) (OMG and the texting! Ha! And the Trout/Splash OTP fanart! And dinner at Benihana!)
I could go on, easily, and if I wrote this again in another year there'd be a whole new list. But this is it, this is why I love fandom, even when it makes me crazy.
