Maybe my idea of non-wanky has been radically skewed over time, but the Mary Sue discussion hasn't yet appeared to go off the deep end.

No, not stupid at all!

I do believe that Jack and Daniel are much more polar opposites in personality, thought processes, etc. and Sam and Teal'c do a good job "keeping the peace" between the two. This is why I adore the team aspect of SG1.
