When Ryan wears green, Spencer thinks back to AP biology in his senior year of high school - how he learned that the eye could see more shades of green than any other color in the spectrum. He is also pretty sure Ryan owns a shirt or pair of pants that is every single shade of green that the eye can see.

By now, he's also figured out that each shade of green Ryan has ever worn has a meaning. Like when he wore the light, light green T-shirt while they were starting the song they'd written from scratch. Freshness. He was trying to convince himself that his words would work with a totally different melody, even as Brendon stumbled over the first verse.

Maybe it was the bright, Irish-hills green that had sparked this observation in the drummer; the awful pants that Ryan had worn when he had gone to see his father. He was trying to pretend he'd be okay. He was giving himself good luck (and Spencer wasn't sure it was working).

It could have been the time Ryan had kissed him, gently but with intent, wearing those pretty fingerless gloves, forest green cashmere he could feel against the back of his neck. He had held those hands for a long time after that, curled up on the couch he'd slept on the past few nights, watching some movie. He knew they weren't completely finished, and he probably always was. There was a sense of total renewal about the place.

Or the time Spencer had fallen asleep in Brendon's lap, and he had awoken to a gentle nudge from the singer and a stony glare from Ryan. The newsboy cap he'd shoved on his head and his face were the same shade, a mint green. Spencer had recognized it, sighing at Ryan's back as the smaller boy turned and left. Honestly, he had just fallen asleep there. Being envious was something he hadn't realized Ryan was capable of.

Then there was the avocado green Ryan had insisted on for the sheets of their bed. Spencer laughed even now, thinking about it. It was honestly a terrible color, but the smaller boy had insisted, clung to him and begged for it, and he had to give in eventually. If nothing else, he was just excited for the idea of cool satin sheets. He rolled his eyes as Ryan grabbed hold of him and hugged him so hard he couldn't breathe, but he was happy for the idea. They still had some youth left in them, they were healthy, and their relationship was growing. It could only get better from there.

Ryan was a mystery to most, his lyrics and quiet demeanor. But Spencer had him figured out perfectly, the way no one else could.
