Green Ones, Blue Ones, Some Even Coming in Gold...

So I heard a while ago about animals called chocobos you can ride around... Would anyone happen to know where I'd find one? I'm assuming I'd be able to tame one and ride it... Just not sure where to find it or what it would eat...

...They're supposed to be giant birds. People are supposed to be able to ride them, so they probably aren't like what I actually am imagining.
