Looking over the criteria, I can't imagine
my essay scoring less than a 4 on a 6 point scale. The strongest case I see for giving me a 3 is "weak(ness) in the use of relevant reasons or examples". Since I have paragraphs with distinct ideas, I don't think I fit "poorly organized". And I think my reasoning is relevant, even though readers might not agree with it.
Its true that I don't actually get to the point until the second paragraph. The first paragraph is just a lead up. Third through fifth are my support. And a one sentence wrap-up. I think that I may lose some points for the somewhat loose relevance of my intro, the abruptness of my conclusion, and my non-explicit transitions.... but I think I still fit the description of a 4 at a minimum:
- presents a clear position on the issue
- develops the position on the issue with relevant reasons and/or examples
- is adequately focused and organized
- expresses ideas with reasonable clarity
- generally demonstrates control of the conventions of standard written English but may have some errors
Would welcome any relevant thoughts.
