Twenty-Ninth Drop: to the other side and back again

We have experienced the City's grey and dim parallel in person only during a curse. There are likely exceptions to this, but it remains that many do not have reliable access ( Read more... )

Mr. Zorin, I believe is what you've mentioned as your name in the past though perhaps I am speaking to the one who was beyond that mirror now. As I've promised, I've come to speak with you again.

This journey you speak of, you're referring to the Shadowlands, correct?

Ah, yes. My apologies, for my reflection. I am The Sorrow -- Zorin is a man long past, left in the fog of war.

Yes, I am referring to the Shadowlands. Have you the need or desire to go there?

The Sorrow? I see.

I've no need to go there, however, I would be lying if I said I wasn't curious. The only thing that I'm stuck on is exactly how it is that you are capable of this? If it were true, wouldn't you have been able to return of your own will during that curse?

The curse was a curious and unusual circumstance. I am able to transport myself to the Shadowlands because in my world, I can move freely between the mortal realm and the spirit world. Apparently here in the City, the Shadowlands take the place of that world for me.

If you wish to go, I will allow you entry.

Move freely between realms? Impossible. I've never heard of a spirit named Sorrow before. Unless this is a new discovery?

Ah, let me explain. There are those with such powers in my world as well, though they're known as Great Spirits. Spirits that rule over the land to maintain a balance in life energy. There are mainly four Great Spirits with elemental bases of wind, water, fire, and earth. Since there are others that have their own unique aspects as well, I suppose you come across as a surprise to me.

It's clear at this point that you're no human. What are you known as in your world?

Our definitions of the word "spirit" appear to be vastly different, from what I can see.

Spirits in my world are the souls of the dead. When humans die, their souls move to the spirit world, the other side, a limbo of sorts. As far as I know, they have no bearing on elements or the balance of life. Most of them cannot interact with the mortal world; some cannot even see it. When I lived, I was a medium, a term for a mortal man who can see the spirit world and any souls still lingering in the mortal realm.

So in a way, I suppose you are correct -- I am not human. I am a human soul; in my world, I am incorporeal and only visible when I wish to show myself to mortals. I suppose you would simply call that a ghost, with a few supernatural abilities that most do not have.

I see, though this is fascinating to hear. It seems many of us do not come from the same world but to see aspects of our worlds cross over like this. Despite the difference in the term 'spirit', the terms 'soul' and 'ghost' however seems to coincide with ours well.

And a medium. It's difficult to pinpoint who exactly in our world would be considered a medium as the souls seem to only appear when one allows it, same with the spirits.

I, for one, have seen a soul channeled through a friend of mine but that is as far as my experience goes. Spirits on the other hand, I've luckily managed to gain their trust to form a pact. I am considered a summoner in my world.

Summoner. Thus, you can call spirits from their realm? I suppose with souls, I can do the same -- I can invoke them if I must, when they may not necessarily want to cooperate. Here, though, generally I require some amount of allowance on the part of the deceased. It depends on the situation. The dead here resemble mortals more than those in my world.

...These intelligent beings obey your command? What are they like, and how did you contact them? Are they related to humans, or are spirits other creatures entirely?

The same for our world. This is the first for myself as well. To think the dead are forced to wander the lands than rest in peace. Such cruelty. Exactly what are the deities of this world thinking? [He sighs.]

That's correct though I am to keep my word to the pact made. Some take their form however, they are completely separate from humans. Holding much divinity and power than any human alone can endure. They are specific to certain locations due to their temperament and the nature of the area itself. Thus a fire spirit has been known to settle near the sands and water near the sea. Logical conclusion.

[He took a breather.] Though unfortunately, or fortunately in my case, the rest was simply luck besides the proper preparations that needed to be met in order to come in contact with them in the first place ( ... )
