Yay! I'm a PhD candidate!

Well, I still have to go through the formality of doing my oral exam with my committee chair. The three professors could not find a time they could all meet with me until a month from now, so I did it with two of them this morning. My chair said that usually these things don't even last the full two hours, so it would probably be consideraly less ( Read more... )

Thanks! I am still trying to calm down from the harrassment I got about turning nouns into adjectives (this from the difficult professor I discussed before). I said, "Hey, I just used the phrases that are in published books!" and he responded, "Right, the whole field of psychology is filled with bad writing." My list of no-nos:
treatment paradigm
integration process
pscyhodrama work
encounter group approaches
consciousness centers
personal growth tools
money issues
and there were more ..... Ack! What's your take on this writing issue?

*blink* what's wrong with those phrases? They are all in *use*, widely, in the field. What are you supposed to say, paradigm de treatment? I think he's being an ivory tower prig, but hey, the dissertation professor is always right. Remember this simple truth and you'll finish your degree in your lifetime, grasshopper. Otherwise, all bets are off.

Oh, and, congratulations!!! :)

Hooray!!! good for you!! I agree with the other friend that your prof is being overly retentive...but until you finish you are at his mercy. sigh. But sounds like you have lots of text in hand already, so it wont be long!

Thanks! The good news is that it's my prerogative to keep my essay readers for my dissertaion committee - or not. I have replaced the difficult professor with a much better choice - Stanley Krippner! I'm SO pleased to have him on my committee. I think this next stage will be much smoother.
