Pick something. Something you want, but something small. Attainable.
I'm going to go for a walk.
Break it down into its parts.
Stand up. Get off the frickin' couch. Dress appropriately. One foot. The other.
It begins. It is done.
Success. Your will that has gotten you to this point. Willpower is the wind beneath your wings. You can do whatever you put your mind to.
Pick something. Something you want.

The bedroom ceiling creeks constantly with the sounds of my teenage daughter's boyfriend late arrival in the middle of the night. I look at my then-husband expecting him to do something. To get up. To throw the drunken son of a gun out of the house. He's worthless.
Covers pulled over my head as tightly as they can be. Trying to ignore the sounds. Getting angrier and angrier at my ex for not doing anything.
Why didn't I feel I had the power to handle the situation?
Decades later I'm still angry, but the anger is at myself for giving my power away.

She searched for answers on the web. Take fish oil, B vitamins, reduce stress. Follow this plan. No, that one. What the heck is rhodiola? Do I have adrenal fatigue? Maybe. This one helps my brain. More choices than in the water aisle at Safeway.
Three diaphragmatic breaths. I am perfect just the way I am.
Stepping into my own power. Centered in my spine.

Sit still. The breeze is picking up on this cool October day. How still can I be? Listening to the wings of the hummingbird at the feeder. Someone turned the volume up on nature's sounds. A squirrel scampers across the dried leaves.
One step. Then another. Life is directional. The proverbial fork in the road reappears with every step that we take.
Pick something. Something you want, but something small. Attainable.
Success.
