Snakes in a Park!

OK, not as exciting as Snakes on a Plane.  Still, I've seen tons of snakes lately.  Mostly garter snakes, which are still totally cool.  The unfortunate thing is that they often like to stretch out across the trail to sun themselves.  While hikers usually create enough disturbance to scare them off the trail before there's danger of stepping on them, the bikers traveling at 20-30mph can't tell a snake from a stick, (I hate to think they are actually aiming for the snakes) and I found two dead ones today that had obviously been killed under bike tires.  The only rattlesnake I've seen so far this year had been run over, too.  :P

I had to tell 4 snakes to get off the trail today so they wouldn't get hurt.  It's nice how they tend to listen so well.  I love the different patterns on the garter snakes out here, and the way they make huge exaggerated sidewinder-like movements to scoot off the trail.  Then, once they reach the vegetation, they almost instantly silently disappear.  Snakes have been steeped deep in mythology from the earliest times of man, and it's not hard to understand why.  They are associated with magic, transformation, and transition, among other things.  The appearance of so many snakes in my life lately is coinciding with what seems to be a major turning point for me as well.  It's truly amazing how nature has so many messages for those who are willing to listen.
