FF: Fall To Pieces - Chapter One

May 24, 2007 16:25

Hi! Okay so I started to write a Huddy story a while ago, chapter two is almost finished! Hope you guys enjoy this one!
Title: Fall To Pieces
Author: Spirita
Disclaimer: Once upon a time I had a dream, and in that dream, there was this bird who told me that I don’t own these characters, he told me not to make any money out of this, and he also told me that if I did owned them, House and Cuddy would have been together a long time ago…Okay I don’t usually believe in birds, especially birds from my insane dreams, but just this one time, I’ll make an exception.
Summary: They love each other, but they are too stubborn to admit it, both afraid to get hurt…But what if fate decided to give them a chance?
Author’s Notes: Okay brace yourselves! This is going to be long! Really long! I have many ideas for this story, and it’s kind of separated in three major themes. Although I still haven’t made up my mind on how many chapters this is going to have…just don’t expect less than ten chapters. Hope you like it! I don’t have a beta reader, so any mistakes you find are mine only. Hope thought you’ll excuse me on that part, I’m Portuguese, and I haven’t read anything in English in a long time! Reviews are always appreciated!

Chapter One - The Past Returns

Lisa Cuddy was having a great week. She had done most of her paper work, actually managed to sleep properly, had gotten a few new major donors, and the best part, she hadn’t thought about firing House yet. Aside from being a great doctor, he was also the greatest source of her problems with the board. And so far, this week, he was actually behaving like a normal human being. Yes, he was still a jerk, but at least he was doing his clinic hours. And he had managed not to talk about her breasts and her ass in front of everyone, which meant he hadn’t embarrassed her in front of her staff…so far.

As she eyed the furious head-nurse coming her way, she knew that her luck was about to change.

“He broke another MRI machine!” The nurse almost shouted opening the door

“Who?” Cuddy had to ask, although she knew exactly the answer to that question

“Doctor House! The patient started to have a seizure in the middle of the exam! And instead of waiting for us to stop the exam and pull him out, he stormed inside the room, ruined the machine and I quote him ‘saved the day’.” Cuddy sighed “And that’s not all! He was rude, and he practically attacked one of our nurses when she said he couldn’t do things like that! She’s going to press charges against him!” The nurse finished with a look of pride on her face at the last statement.

“Great! I knew it was too good to be true!” Cuddy thought

“Don’t worry Brenda; I’ll talk with Doctor House myself! He will be punished!”

The nurse looked pleased enough and got out. Cuddy sighed again. Now not only did she have to replace the MRI machine again, she would have to discourage an angry nurse, to not press charges against House…again. That would definitely be the hardest part. The entire Hospital staff disliked House. Aside from his co-workers and Wilson; no one could stand the man!

She mentally prepared herself for what was waiting for her as she got out of her office, anger making its way trough her body. The man was a genius, an insane genius, but a genius. But what he had on brilliance he lacked on charisma. She hated him. And she loved him. It was a duality of feelings that she couldn’t comprehend, and that made her even angrier.

She steeped out of the elevator, her expression darkened with fury.

“Is there something wrong?” A voice behind her brought her back to reality.

Cuddy looked at Wilson.

“Where’s House?” She quickly asked

“In his office with his staff…” Wilson looked at his boss. Something was obviously wrong. “What has he done this time?”

“Long story!” She said as she headed to her employee’s office.

She abruptly opened the door. House looked at Cuddy with amusement.

“Ah, doctor Cuddy! Glad you could join us!”

“Tell me something House, is making my life miserable a personal goal in your life?”

“Actually my personal goal is to make everyone’s life miserable, not just yours! Funny, I would never have pictured you as the narcissistic kind!” He was mocking her, knowing she would get angrier if he did so.

“You ruined an MRI machine…” Cuddy began

“Add to! Poor guy was dying!” He would always interrupt her

“…I had just replaced the last one you broke…” She continued

“Want me to pay it? How’s sexual favours work for you?” He grinned

“…And you attacked one of the nurses! …Again” She finished

“Well, she was in my way, and my patient was dying…So technically I did the right thing!”

“She’s going to press charges against you!”

“No, she’s not!” He stated

“Why? Are you going to apologize?” Cuddy asked in disbelieve

“No. But you’re going to talk to her!”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Is that so?”

“Look, House did what was best for the patient! He saved his life! If mister Graam’s family ever founded out that their relative died because of protocols, the Hospital would have been sued!” Cameron replied

Cuddy looked at Cameron as though she was an annoying bug.

“This is not about protocols!”

“No! This is about you wanting him to be a whole new different person! You want him to do whatever you feel like doing! You can’t change him!” Cameron said kind of indignantly

“Geez, I always thought that was you! I’m glad you cleared that out, wouldn’t want me to get confused, or anything!” House said dryly

“Hey, I’m defending you!” Cameron spat back

Cuddy looked at the others. Foreman had a look that clearly said he had nothing to do with anything and Chase was looking rather annoyed. She turned to Cameron.

“Mind your own business!” Cameron looked at her obviously displeased, and was about to say something but Cuddy fcut her off by turning to House saying “And you, go do your clinic duty!”

“But doctor Cuddy” He whined “I’m in the middle of a case!”

“As far as I know, you don’t treat the patient! You just tell them” She gestures to his staff members“what to do! And that, you can do while you’re at the clinic!”

“But I won’t be concentrated!” He said looking like a four-year old who was pleading his mommy to give him his favourite toy

“Clinic duty or apologies to nurse!” Cuddy stated

House looked at his ‘kids’.

“Start the treatment! I’ll be at the clinic!” He looked at Cuddy “Don’t go complaining on me, when I start misdiagnosing people!”

«-----------------»

House was in one word: bored! What was it with Cuddy always making sure he had a bad time at work? Sure he had been impolite to the nurse, and he had broken another MRI machine, but that wasn’t that much of a big deal! At least Cameron had stood up for him, although he doubted she approved his conduct! He really needed to give her a rise!

He looked at the middle-age woman in front of him, she was complaining about her arm for about ten minutes, absorbing the first one, he figured that she had a muscle distension, probably because she had been working to hard.

“Hm…” He looked at her medical file, pretending to write everything down “And when did the pain started?”

She kept on going, talking no-senses, trying to diagnose what she had, probably from what she read on the internet. He had enough. He interrupted the woman, and gave the prescription for a cream.

“That’s it?” She asked

“What else do you want? Your arm hurts! Do you want me to chop it off?”

The woman exited the room furious. He sighed.

“Finally, some silence!” He thought

He took his portable tv out of his pocket and turned it on. The door opened. He cursed his luck under his breath and looked at his other patient.

«-----------------»

Cuddy was in her office sitting on her chair looking outside the window. She had talked to the nurse, gave her a few days off to reconsider her decision. Cuddy didn’t even know why she did it. House was exhausting, infuriating, a centre of troubles, and yet, every time he screwed up, she would be there to glue the pieces back to their rightful place. She was getting tired; it was not like he thanked her or anything.

The doors to her office opened suddenly. She didn’t need to turn around to know that it was him.

“I need your permission to do a surgery!” He told her

“No!”

“What…?” He sounded confused “I haven’t even told what it is, and you’re already turning me down?”

“Your patient does not have a brain tumour! There’s nothing on his head-scan!” She explained

“But…”

“What part of ‘no’, didn’t you understand?” She turned her face to him

“The part where you’re wrong, and you still tell me ‘no’! He’s going to die without the surgery!”

“No, he’s going to die, if has the surgery without needing it!”

“What part of ‘he’s going to die’ didn’t you understand?” He imitated her

“If I gave you carte blanche every time you say someone’s about to die, half of your patients would have died!” She glared at him “You’re not doing the surgery!”

He was angry, she could tell.

“No wonder you’re single, who could stand a bitter woman like you?!” He turned and limped his way out of her office.

One single tear ran down her face. Yes, she was tired.

«-----------------»

House made his way trough the corridors. She was innerving! And yet, he couldn’t bring himself to be angry at her for more than a few hours. He was right, he knew it! He just had to find a way to do the damn surgery. He would deal with the consequences later. More clinic hours!

He entered his office. His staff filled him in, on the news about the patient: getting worse.

“Oh, a man was just here looking for you!” Cameron said

“A man? Well in that case, not interested! I’m not into that kind of stuff you know?” He said

She ignored him.

“He wanted to thank you personally, for taking care of his nephew at the clinic! Something about refusing him drugs or something…”

“Ah, addict guy! Good fellow!” he remembered the patient from the previous afternoon. “Hope you dismissed him!”

“I told him to come later!”

“Big mistake!”

“You know, hearing people thanking you, is not that bad, it means you did something good!”

“Please, you’re destroying my reputation! Be quiet!” he complained

Cameron sighed. The others just rolled their eyes.

“Go prepare yourselves for surgery” he told them

“Cuddy said yes?” Foreman asked in disbelieve

“Uh, if I said go…?” he asked sarcastically

Wilson entered in time to hear the last part as his staff left the room.

“She said no, right?” Wilson asked his friend

“Yep!”

“She’s going to have a fit!”

“Don’t care!”

“You know, one of these days, Cuddy’s not going to be there for you! You keep on pushing on your relationships with people; just to see how far they will go until it breaks!” Wilson stated

“I do believe we’ve had this conversation before!”

“I’m not talking about me! You always take Cuddy for granted, and she’s not! There will come a day when she’ll get tired of putting up with your crap, and when that day comes, my friend, you’ll be without a job!”

House smiled.

“Happy you let that out?” Wilson nodded “Good! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to check on that surgery!” He passed Wilson on his way to the door “And I trust you won’t be telling Cuddy about it!”

Wilson sighed and watched his friend exit the office.

«-----------------»

Cuddy was worried. She half-expected House to be annoying her about the surgery, but he was taking her negative response fairly well enough. And that was worrying her.

She made her way to his office and opened the door. Empty.

“That’s odd! Where is everyone?” She whispered to herself

“Uh, excuse me? Is doctor House around here somewhere?” a voice behind her spoke

She turned her face towards the man standing at the door and gasped in disbelieve.

“Marcus?”

He smiled.

“Lisa!”

She smiled back.

“What are you doing in here? I thought you were in England!”

“I came back a few weeks ago!”

She approached him and gave him a hug.

“I missed you!” He said

“Me too! I miss having a true friend around!”

She broke the hug.

“What are you doing in here?”

“I’m looking for doctor House! He kind of did my family a favour yesterday!”

“Oh?” She was surprised

“It’s a long story, how about you?”

“I work here!”

He smiled.

“Well then, where’s this House?”

“That’s a very good question…he’s probably…busy!” She finally said

“That good of doctor, uh?”

“He’s different!” She smiled “Maybe you should come back later!”

“Maybe…” He looked into her eyes. “Lisa…I…”

“Yes?”

“Do you want to go out, have some dinner?”

“Marcus, I…don’t think…”

“It’s just dinner!” He interrupted her

She sighed. She and Marcus had dated a few years ago. She knew then that she wasn’t just a date to him, she was much more than that. Marcus had feelings for her…and she…had feelings for someone else. Still has…

“No wonder you’re single, who could stand a bitter woman like you?!”

His words flashed trough her mind. She had had enough.

“Alright!” Cuddy said after a while “I’ll go out with you!”

To be continued

Author’s Notes: Okay, not much happened in this chapter! But hey we need something to start with, right? I needed to write this chapter, for you guys to understand how Cuddy is tired of putting up with House without even getting so much as a ‘thank you’ in return of every thing she does for him. I hope I portrayed the characters well though; I usually have difficulty on that matter. Review if you want to see House’s reaction to Cuddy’s date.
