Wild Girls
I am watching this cool show on Athenian democracy. It seems that in ancient Greece, at the age of 6-7 years old young Athenian girls were expected to make a 2 day journey to a certain sanctuary where they lived for a year as wild animals. During this time they were called a "little bears." They wore headresses and animal skins and "danced together naked." When they had "exhausted their savage side" they could come back to the city and be presented to their future husbands.
Now, my first reaction to this was WEIRD! But then I remembered my own girl children at the age of 6-7 and thought, hmm, "little bear" might be an appropriate name for that age. The only problem is . . . have they already "exhausted their savage sides?" I wonder . . .
I predict I will get an "Oh Mom!" out of this. :)
