...but one of the kids in my church's Sunday School confided that his peers have been watching RedTube and other sexually explicit material while passing it around to other kids in school. He's like, 10 going on 11

That is too young - but honestly, I kinda remember stuff like this when I was growing up - not in church, though. Honestly, I kinda assume girls would be more into sexually explicit material at this point, if only because most ten year old boys wouldn't be going through puberty yet. On the other hand, if he has a brother he's trying to emulate, that could be part of it.
Yeah. What I'm saying is that being inquisitive about sex at that age is normal, but it was just unnerving to see a kid that still needs his mom to make sure his shirt is buttoned properly can be so nonchalant about pornography.
Or, it could be that generation. It's us isn't it? Us generation of fogey old prudes! :P
Let's put it this way: when I was about that age, I was playing with dolls, and some kids thought they were cool reading tween magazines embarassing stories, about girls getting their periods and crap. At the time, it seemed like they knew what they were talking about - but looking back, I know they were complete idiots. The kid in question may be an early bloomer, but I'm willing to bet there's a lot of influence making him act that way.

Actually, I was reading an article about a year ago that was contrasting our generation to the new group of teens (I'm 26, so it's safe to say I'm not a teenager anymore) and it showed that the kids have come full circle - apparently, my generation of Britney Spears and Lil' Aguileiras' didn't rub off - when you look at Miley Cirus and even that stupid Twilight movie, the characters are way more clothed than my mid-drift bearing attention whores counterparts - this being said, an earlier article showed that we are dressing our young kids

Sex Ed was taught when I was in fourth grade... so me and my fellow peers were about 9-ish then? Back when I was growing up, we didn't have the internetz, so them little boys didn't have access to teh pr0n. I do wonder that if we did, if some of my classmates would have gone onto the net to search for it.
"Back then" there wasn't internet porn, but there were still magazines that some kids always managed to get a hold of and ummmmm....distribute to other kids!
You know, I have a strange philosophy towards your question. It's not a terrible thing for a kid to view some explicit stuff (ok, not anything TOO hardcore or illegal), but as long as it's not too easily accessible. In other words, make the damn kids work for it! Typing "sex" into google is just too easy and doesn't teach kids to have any sort of creativity!! Parents need to install blocks and filters, and kids not only need to learn how to defeat them, but also to do it without leaving any trace. Kids (smart ones anyway) will always cross the boundaries. The problem with inattentive parents combined with internet access is that those boundaries aren't even there in the first place.
