*My understanding of the level of relationship in America.*
A "Date" - basically going out to meet each other and see if there are any chemistry. But no commitment, no pressure, nothing. Basically you and the other person has some sort of "interest" in each other in order to have a date (most of the time anyway. Blind date excluded, lol.)
If things work out...
Seeing - basically a more frequent "going out." Again, nothing is final, no commitment. In fact the difference between Dating and Seeing is very subjective.
If things still work out...
Dating (notice... it is NOT just a date) - A little less than a regualr "relationship"... holding hands, call each other "honey," you just do everything you normally do in a relationship - except the commitment part. It is still not a serisous thing... more like a "trial."
If things still, still work out.... (lucky you... or... I pity you?)
Relationship - you basically call each other boy/girlfriend... you should be loyal to each other, they often move in with each other... (wait... this already sounded like a married couple, lol.)
If things still, still, still! work out...
Marriage - is when they are ready to settle down... (or thinking about divorce already... haha)

*My prospective of levels of relationship*
Friend - talk to each other and find chemistry within each other as you take your time to know each other.
If both party has feelings for each other...
Dating - a chance for both party to understand each other more. And find common interests and/or stronger attractions in each other. (Usually the focus is on one date rather than multiple dates.)
If both party has "stronger" feelings for each other...
Relationship - Semi-commitment. You hold hands, kiss, call each other sweet names, loyalty, dedication, and family gathering, etc.
If both party "and" family agrees...
Marriage - settle down, have kids, plans for the family, (you better have a good job by now), and save college funds for the kids. (HAHAHA).
