- Watching, politics, racism and homophobia: in Redditch UKIP councillor Dave Small minded has been suspended, only four days after being elected, for his racist and homophobic comments referring to Clare Balding and Sir Elton John as "perverts" and African British people as "scroungers". These comments were made before he was elected so UKIP presumably fielded him as a candidate either knowing he's homophobic and racist or without bothering to vet him at all. How are your newly elected representatives doing? Is a suspension after only 4 days a record? ETA: And expulsion from UKIP after only 5 days, but he's still an Independent Councillor for Church Hill, Redditch. MORE ETAs in comments below.
- Watching, listening, nostalgic comedy:
capriuni and I were discussing George Formby and I recalled 90s comedy show The Day Today’s
claim that Formby performed Subterranean Homesick Blues, hee! (12sec youtube) Although even funnier imo is Chris Morris’s sketch of
Nirvana’s menstrual towel advert, complete with smiling women in white, lol (1min youtube).
- History, Scotland: Louis Black portrait by James Irvine. Louis Black was born circa 1820 in Brazil, and died in 1886 in Montrose, Scotland. Alexander MacKay of Broomley had bought Louis Black as a chattel slave in Brazil and brought him to Britain during the mid-1830s. MacKay sent Black to school in the town of Montrose and, when MacKay returned to Brazil, Black stayed in Scotland where he was legally a free man. Black worked as a gardener, and also as a waiter-for-hire at private and public dinners (where a black servant would presumably have been a talking point). In his leisure time Louis Black reputedly enjoyed angling and golfing. MacKay left Black an annuity in his will.
- Reading, books 2014, 81: Letting in the Rumour, by Gillian Clarke. Up to Clarke’s usual high standards.
- Watching, films: background singer documentary 20 Feet From Stardom. Total win.
- Watching, gigs: Bootleg Abba for charity ("prostrate cancer", according to the compere). /charidee
