It's funny... when I was little, my mother decided that I needed to take all manner of classes... gymnastics, ballet, tap dance... and I LOATHED them all.  Okay, actually, I kinda liked tap, but it's not something that can be practiced when you live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building with more or less no sound-proofing, so that was short- ( Read more... )

You are aware that a lot of bellydancing moves involve the knees, their stability, flexibility and strength?

*my mother learned to bellydance while living in Turkiye, teaching with the Peace Corps, and was good enough to perform at cafes and festivals there while being a tiny white girl from Detroit, no small feat in that era.

Fortunately, the bad knee should be finished moving into "Maintenance" phase, which means it's reasonably stable again (there are only a couple of things that I can't do anymore), and I actually have to do things that strengthen the surrounding muscle now. I'm fully planning that there are some dance moves that won't be happening in my world. Floor work is right out.

Gamewise, it's actually written into her backstory that the reason she's not a professional dancer anymore is bad knees, so it works there, too. If I AM dancing in game, it means it's already a good knee day. :)

That's awesome about your mom, too. :) The closest I had in my family is that my aunt was a showgirl out in Vegas until she quit to marry a nice Navy man and moved back East.

First time I sang where anyone else could hear me was at a larp.

'Cause I can lie to myself and say "it's what my character would do, and if I look like an idiot, it's not me, just my PC." Worked okay. ;)

When I was in high school, one of my teachers asked me why I had such a hard time with public speaking. I'd nearly vomit if I had to talk in class, or worse, get up and speak in front of them. She (rightly so) couldn't understand how I could have that bad of a reaction, when I have almost NO stage fright or issues on stage at all. My response?

"On stage, I'm someone else. I'm Kim, or Brigitta, or MaryEllen. In front of the class? That's Melissa, and that's entirely different."
