I've come up with a new high water mark for friendship. A real friend will sift your compost bin for you.
I was at my friend T's house yesterday evening and we were in the backyard playing with planting things and whatnot. I asked what she'd like me to do. Mostly joking, she said, "You could pull dirt from the bottom of the compost bin."
"Okay."
She may have done a double take, although she knows I'm as much of a greenie/compost geek as she is, so maybe not. Granted, it turned out to be a bit wetter and stinkier even at the bottom than I'd expected, but once I was in the zone it wasn't so bad. I filled a five gallon pail with high quality soil. And in the process throw the un-broken down parts back into the top. I also gave it a good mix up with a pitchfork afterward, which is also supposed to be helpful for the whole process.
She definitely needs more browns in her pile, though. I'll have to work on bringing her some dry leaves or more shredded paperwork.
