[[oh. this is new. this place isn't her house, and it's not anywhere she's ever been. there are rows of polished wood leading to bunches of white pillar-like objects. there are also many, shining balls on racks.

after a moment of thinking, she adds to all together. the balls. the rows. the white things. the huge banner with bold letters.]] This is ( Read more... )

[Wes is alone. At a bowling alley. Whatever that was. With a teenage girl.

Well, this is awkward.]

I, uh, am not really familiar with the game.

[[she smiles and puffs up a little. wonderful, a chance to show her know-how!]] Do no worry! I will show you!

[[with that, she runs over to the ball rack and picks one up. she examines it, as if she has any idea what makes one ball different than the other. with a firm nod, she walks over to the lane, walking slightly over the line. she stops, and looks over her shoulder.]] You must knock down all the pins! With this ball! Look.

Hyaaaa!

[[she quickly heaves the ball over her head and chucks it as far as she possibly can. being heavy, the thing quickly lands on the lane with a thunderous noise before rolling a few feet and ultimately finding itself in the gutter.]]

[[she watches it make its way to the end, then turns around and walks back over.]] I am very new to this game! But, someone on the phone told me how to play! [[she's smiling as she explains this. really, they just told her that she was supposed to knock the pins over. they never explained how.]]

Oh. I am Nia, by the way. It is very nice to meet you!

[Okay. AIming. He can work with her on aiming.]

I'm Wes. Do you have any idea how we wound up here?

But, uh, I guess I can help you with that a bit. It doesn't look too complicated.

[No sights on those balls. That might complicate things.]

Hello, Wes! And, no, I do not. This place does strange things!

Oh, you can? Wonderful!

Okay, so the trick whenever you're dealing with an activity where you need to aim is to focus on where you want to hit.

[Wes is intensely relieved that he is just teaching a kid to play a game, not how to shoot. There are things he is so not okay with.]

Focus! Yes, alright! I will focus! [[she's nodding enthusiastically now.]]

So, I must focus on the pins, yes?

Yep. Usually when you're throwing or shooting something, it's going to end up where you're looking.

I see. That makes sense! [[she picks up another ball.]]

You have never played the game, correct? But, you seem quite knowledgeable in the field of targeting and throwing things!

A soldier...

[[she stares at the pins before running at the lane and throwing the ball again. it makes it much farther, and manages to roll and knock a few of the pins over before disappearing.]]

So, you fight! What are you a soldier for?

Much better, you'll get the hang of this!

We're called the New Republic these days, but when I started out we were the Rebel Alliance.

Rebel Alliance. That is a very interesting name. What do you fight, exactly? Is there a reason for your fighting?

We were fighting the Empire. They didn't like anyone who wasn't human. And even the ones that were, they had a pretty narrow view of how people should ask. And if you stepped out of line...

[Remembers he's talking to a kid]

It wasn't pretty.

The Empire... [[the sounds... pretty familiar.]]

That sounds like my father. Except, he was fighting to get rid of humans. He said that all humans had to die and they were not allowed to live on the surface of the earth.

It was not pretty for us, either.
