Character Name: Vaan
Series: Final Fantasy XII
Gender: Male
Age & Canon Point: 17. End of Final Fantasy XII.
Requested Sponsor: Sapphire or Amethyst. Vaan would like Ruby, but we all know he’s not cool enough.
History:
Right here. Abilities & Physical Abnormalities: Vaan’s special ability is rat slaying.. Vaan has three Quickenings. They are high powered attacks, descriptively named “red spiral”, “white whorl” and “pyroclasm”. Vaan can fly certain types of airships, and has good general statistics for physical attacks and magic.
Personality: Vaan’s personal journey is one of trying to find his purpose. That goal is largely shown fulfilled through Vaan’s personality. Instead of going with the flow, Vaan decides to break away and finally realize his dreams, or as near as he can figure to what they may be. When asked by Balthier, what it is Vaan wants, Vaan can’t find an answer, instead awkwardly stumbling with his words, unable to give one.
Vaan is a young adult finding himself. Many times Vaan is defiant, rebellious, and even angry, although he’s usually able to curb it. Even when angry, Vaan is able to listen to people and to learn from them. He has an open mind, though arguably not a broad one. All his past hate comes from personal hurt he’s suffered, that he’s able to overcome.
Due to his past, Vaan shows himself as a very sympathetic and even empathetic person. He supports his friends and genuinely cares about them in times of importance, though with his younger friends, he’s often given to playfully teasing them. At times, Vaan has a somewhat childish, snubbing attitude, though it somewhat fades in intensity as he leaves his war-torn home, along with all the hate and hollowness of his past.
Vaan is a generally a very tolerant person, though he turns his attitude against people that are not as accepting of others as he himself. As long as Vaan feels a person has a good heart, he trusts them, despite their background.
As the ‘special’ one of the group, Vaan occasionally asks naïve, silly, or just plain stupid questions that would make most people groan. These comments betray his immaturity. Vaan is still a kid. He’s able to play and get excited over simple things during a serious journey. Vaan can also be very stupidly optimistic. The idea of danger and unknown places usually excite him. Vaan likes the unknown and will charge directly into it. It’s remarked that he has a personality of a sky pirate, the one kind he wanted to be all along.
What are your plans for the character in-game? Vaan’s ultimate goal in the game would be to see as much of the new world as possible through exploring it. If that means going through cadet training to become a SeeD, he’ll do that as a means toward an end. Like any good sky pirate in training, he’ll also be on the lookout for any valuables as well, but he would mostly be out for adventure.
Anything else? No.
Complete TWO out of the FIVE options.
i) IC Questionnaire
(As this questionnaire is entirely IC, your character is free to lie.)
What do you prefer to be known as?
Vaan. Just Vaan is all right.
How old are you?
17. But that doesn’t make me a kid or anything.
Do you have any history in combat?
Yeah, a long history. You can check into it.
If so, have you ever killed?
Uh, yeah, I guess so. Mostly just monsters though.
i) How do you feel when you get involved in some project that calls for immediate and rapid activity?
Sign me up! It’s more fun that way.
ii) Do you organize and initiate leisure activities?
No. Why organize it? I’d rather just do it. But yeah, I’ll take time off to do fun stuff. Somebody’s gotta keep things from being so serious sometimes.
iii) What role do you take when working in a group?
Leader. I can still work in a team though.
iv) How talkative are you around other people?
I talk, but I don’t blab non-stop. You know how it is.
v) What three things would you want to have with you on a desert island? State your reasoning.
1. A sword. Things live in the desert and I don’t want to get attacked without protection. Plus, gotta get food somehow.
2. Penelo, I guess. I could live without her, but I don’t want to be there alone. It’d get really boring.
3. An airship, so I can leave.
vi) Is it important to be liked by a wide range of people?
It’s nice, but I could live without everyone loving me. Orphans living in Rabanastre got treated like trash all the time, so I’m used to it.
vii) When the odds are against you, it is worth taking a chance? Yes.
viii) Do you consider yourself to be an impulsive person? Probably. Sky pirates are like that.
ix) Would you agree that planning things ahead takes the fun out of life?
Totally. I’d rather have adventure than some elaborate plan that you have to stick to. You have to be willing to adapt to what comes at you.
x) Do you like surprises?
Yeah, good or bad, I’ll take it.
xi) Do you sometimes wonder if there is something wrong with you?
Me? No…? I’m fine.
xii) Do you consider yourself to be smarter than your superiors, and disagree with their decisions?
Who are my superiors? Maybe Balthier and Fran, if anyone? No, I’m not smarter than Fran, but Balthier, maybe. And we don’t disagree that much. We just sort of go along with each other.
xiii) Lastly, how do you feel about cabbages?
They’re okay??
ii) Prose sample
In Balamb Garden, the day quickened toward its end, the golden sunlight slowly fading from the roadways. A light breeze passed through the air, and Vaan leaned into it, as held the reins of a well-trained chocobo, a mail carrier from Balamb Town to the Garden. The messenger man searched for something distractedly, not interested in any chitchat with a foreigner. Somehow, the snub felt all too familiar.
“You know…” Vaan attempted, “these chocobos are the only things that are anything like where I come from. It’s nice that you have them too.”
“Yeah. I’m sure it is,” the messenger muttered, his tone lacking patience, as he flipped through the letters in his hand, never looking up at Vaan. “Hold him here for a minute, will ya? I gotta take a piss.” The messenger strode away, not waiting for an answer.
Vaan waited until the man was out of earshot.
“Man, what a jerk. Probably only trusts me because I’m wearing this stupid cadet uniform.” Vaan pulled at the scratchy, stiff fabric, frowning to himself. “Well… maybe he shouldn’t trust so much.” He didn’t look anything like a sky pirate wearing these clothes. More like some kind of soldier. And he hated that.
Patting the smooth beak of the chocobo, Vaan waited the messenger’s return. He had only newly arrived at the Garden and none of the faces he saw were familiar so far. On one hand, the idea of a new place seemed exciting to Vaan, yet the whole ‘SeeD cadet, go to classes blahblahblah’ thing wasn’t too appealing to someone who’d rather just explore the place freely. Why did he have to know anything to go fight monsters anyway? Some of it seemed useful, but come on, chemistry, as a required class? …Totally useless.
And how long did it take this guy to use the bathroom anyway? Vaan looked around, still noticing no messenger within sight. The crowd was thinning out now, making him suddenly worry about missing curfew. Vaan knew there was some kind of curfew in the Garden, but he hadn’t bothered to check what time it was. The information was back in his dorm. If curfew had anything to do with the time it got dark, he was in trouble.
Maybe if he just loosened these reins a bit… pretended the chocobo got away from him? It’d serve the guy right. The chocobo’s eyes gleamed back at Vaan, black, beady, friendly… yet judging.
