There had been only an endless blue blending into the continuum of a cloudless sky. It was the same scenery on most days. Other times there was an overcast in the most beautiful shades of gray, a sheer curtain of feathery rain. Sometimes the sky even dyed the water fuchsia on a hot summer day, and no matter what the weather or time of year, a new portrait was painted at the beginning of each day and night. That afternoon had been its usual mood of clear skies and water, the turquoise edges and depths as warm and inviting as ever. She practiced holding her breath underwater, swimming, though it usually turned to an idle floating of watching the passing above. She had never been quite so fit to strain her lung capacity or a good swimmer at that, but she was trying. Being close to the water felt closer to him.

Wakka was a wonderful teacher. Rikku was as well, though their training sessions usually became more for play than anything else. She taught Yuna how to move in the water, and helped to hold her down when she wasn't meant to float. Lately, though, Rikku had not been coming to visit Besaid quite as often.

The day was quiet, the self training she had assigned herself almost meditative. The seconds counted and gave away into minutes. She was coming to her fourth round of sixty before something cold, like ice, seemed to pass by her. She startled, keeping mind not to gasp inwardly before she planted her feet to the ground and pushed up with a splash. Blue. It was a strange thing to imagine it to be anything different. The desire to stay in the water was gone with the chill. Picking up her boots at the shore, Yuna pushed through the door of one of Besaid's huts to go into its interior, and everything blue had become back.

The water from her clothing dripped over the metal steps and through them to a distant ground. It was a staircase, and all of a sudden Yuna thought she was dreaming, or maybe was even still in the water. Black outlines of foreign architecture were near the bottom, and nothing seemed to be above. Her boots tumbled down a few steps from her position. Speechless, her thoughts seeming to escape her with the abrupt transition, she placed one hand against the railing for balance, and then two fingers to her lips.

She whistled.

The shrill cry seemed to echo endlessly, repeatedly, and with a resilient intensity. Invisible birds carried her message above and over the entirety of the city. Whatever fears, whatever anxiety had seized her with the nightmare of the unknown city, she closed her eyes to whistle and dispel them, attempting to summon the light of a dream.
