Ema stretched a little on the couch, half asleep. Honestly, she spent a lot of her time sleeping. Came from depression (which was much, much better, but still enough to exhaust her some days) and having nothing else to do.
Life in the city, when it wasn't terrifying, was... well, boring. There really wasn't much to do with all of the free time available.
A knock at the front door to the apartment spooked Ema into awareness. She instantly feared the worst, terrified that it was the Church or Matt or Chief Gant or Joe Darke or...
Maora, judging from the cheerful voice calling hello from the other side of the door. Thank goodness. Filled with relief, Ema hopped up and opened the front door with a smile. "Hello!"
The treasurer had something behind her back, a very big grin plastered on her face. "I have something for you..." Maora teased, her voice as playful as ever.
One might notice that the bright red ribon that was usually tied in a bow around her neck was absent, but no one would probably think to ask why.
"May I come in?" She chirped, obviously trying to contain some kind of enthusiasm. Usually, she woudl have just entered anyway, but seeing as the last time her and Ema talked her boldness was a little off-setting, Maora decided to play it safe.
"S-something for me?? Maora, you should have..." Ema didn't completely understand why this girl was so determined to be such good friends with her.
They had only met once, and they didn't seem to have too much in common, interest-wise. Maora was artistic and free-spirited. Ema was a scientist.
Still... Ema couldn't bring herself to complain, or even mind. Something about Maora's determination was nice. "Sure, sure, come on in." She stepped aside to let the other girl (ha) pass.
Maora bounced in, box evident behind her back. But what was IN the box was the question. "I saw on your journal that you were considering going to the masquerade, am I right?" The brunette still had that look on her face.
The one that only meant trouble.
"I'm certain that you would have to actually be persuaded to go. So I wanted to play the magician for Cinderella..." Again. Maora extended the white box to Ema.
Ema blinked.
"Magician? Isn't it a fairy godmother?" Still, it would probably be a very nice costume. Maora was good at that kind of thing, after all.
"Well... I thought it would be nice to do something other than sulk and..." be afraid, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to tell Maora all that just yet. The poor girl would probably run away if she knew. Ema did not want that.
"I've always been told the story that it was a magician that gave Cinderella the chance to go to the ball..." Maora explained, and took a step closer to Ema. "But the difference is that if I were the real magician...I would never let the prince take Cinderella away from me." Her golden eyes wavered as she looked down at Ema, only a slight head taller.
Lana was in the bedroom, keeping herself up to date with whatever she could access through the laptop. Eventually, the laptop started to bleed.. and she frowned, closing it for now. Fickle things that they were.
She paused a moment, hearing voices in the other room, and walked over to the door, finding Ema talking to... someone. "Oh, Ema. I didn't know you had company over."
Ema felt her stomach tighten as her cheeks flushed a little. She was suddenly very, very grateful for the poor lighting. "I-I... thanks..."
Lana's interruption of the two of them spooked her, and she jumped a little. Ema had always been skittish, and the city just exaserbated that trait. "Oh, Lana! This is my friend Maora. Maora, this is my sister Lana."
Maora didn't need lighting to notice the blush on Ema-chan's face. In fact, she was about to take another step closer, when another person entered the room.
"Maa! Ema-chan's neechan, hm~?" The treasurer dropped the act of seducing the little sister to give a small bow, "It's very nice to meet you!"
"Hello, Maora. It is nice to meet you, as well." Lana tilted her head and managed a polite smile, seemingly unaware of anything that she might have interrupted.
It was good to know that Ema had friends, since friends were always good to distract from other, more distressing issues.
Ema smiled. Her sister--the most important person in her life--seemed to approve of Maora. Ema wasn't entirely sure why, but that was a very, very good thing.
Maora returned the smiles, then shoved the box at Ema. "Well? Open it!" The brunette really wanted her to see the work on the costume she had done.
Lana looked at the box, and smiled a bit. Okay, a gift. Surely, Maora was nice and kind.. but Lana wasn't someone who trusted someone right away. She remained by the door, curiously awaiting to see what was inside.
Ema took the box that was shoved her way. "Okay, okay! I'll open it!" She gave Maora a bit of a playful shove without even realizing that maybe, just maybe it was not the best idea if Maora misinterpreted it as hostilty.
Ema was a scientist, not a behavioral expert.
She took the box to the couch and sat, pulling off the wrappings and opening the package. It was... a dress. No, a gown.
A few moments of stunned silence passed before Ema could speak. "T-this is for me?"
The grin turned to a serene smile and Maora clasped her hands behind her back in her trademark pose. With a nod, she asked, "Will Cinderella allow the magician to escort her to the ball?"
"It might not be the ideal fairy tale...but if you want...I'll make sure you have a good time." Maora looked to study Ema's face, but out of the corner of her eye looked to where Lana stood. Had her sister figured it out-before Maora could tell her friend the truth?
Lana raised an eyebrow at the dress. Certainly the dress was expensive.. well, in her world, anyway. But it would be nice to see Ema dressed up. It would look beautiful on her, no doubt.
However, something was bothering Lana. As someone who worked as a chief in the prosecutor's office, and before that, an officer on the LAPD, she was good at observing details.
Something bothered her about Maora, but she couldn't figure out what. Keeping that hidden, she instead remained smiling. "That is a beautiful dress. It will be nice to see you dressed so daintly, Ema."
While Ema was also good at noticing details, she had a tendency to only notice the ones she wanted to, and even then it was not unheard of for her to interpret said observations incorrectly.
However, observation wasn't even part of the equation at the moment. She just sat there a few moments longer, staring at the dress. It really was beautiful--Maora shouldn't have. "I... I..."
The sentence never really formed itself. Ema sprang up from the couch and hugged Maora instead.
Honestly, the hug caught Maora completely off guard. She stumbled a step backwards to catch herself and Ema, but then wrapped her arms around the slightly smaller girl.
"You're welcome." Maora said softly, placing a gentle hand atop Ema's head. Her heart felt a pang run through it. This was why she was so determined to save her...
...because Maora knew this was the real Ema that was standing before her. It was just fortunate that the layers of clothing prevented Ema from realizing Maora's secret, because the treasurer wanted to explain it to Ema alone, at a more appropriate moment
Lana's smile faded slightly, watching the two for a moment before she glanced behind her, back towards the laptop. She had been thinking of attending the ball, but chose not to to stay home and be with Ema. But, if Ema was going..
...maybe there was a way she could still keep watch over her sister. The thought is considered as she turned back to watch the two.
"Would you like anything, Maora?" She inquired. "We don't have much food, but what we have I can offer you."
"Ah, actually...I am a little hungry." Maora admitted sheepishly. Usually, the treasurer took care of feeding the others, so it was very awkward for it to be turned around like this.
Lana nodded her head, and left the doorframe to head for the kitchen. "I apologize - we only really have instant food stuff left."
That was really all that was there, and Lana was kind of getting sick of instant ramen. "I hope that is alright."
"It's fine." Maora added at her retreating form.
Lana pulled out a pot, and began heating up water. They didn't have much bottled water left, but there was enough to make enough ramen for the three of them. She began to work on heating the water, for now.
Ema smiled as she pulled back from Maora a little. "S-sorry, I didn't mean to nearly tackle you." Her gaze flitted up to Maora's eyes briefly before headed floorward. "It's just... it's beautiful. Thank you so much."
Softer, she added, "I'd be happy to go with you... if that wouldn't be weird..."
There was a light laugh that came from Maora's lips, and she replied very happily, "I'm glad that you like it."
At Ema's tone softening, Maora realized...it wasn't like at the Imperial Academy, where relationships like this tended to be more normal than not.
Maora looked at the floor herself. Should she tell her now? "Ne, Ema-chan...."
Lana peeked out from the kitchen, looking over at the two for a moment before she spoke up. It wasn't that she wanted to interrupt, but certain things had to be monitored.
"The soup will be ready in a few minutes. Is there anything else I can get for you? Some tea, perhaps?"
Ema looked back towards the kitchen. "Tea sounds really nice. I didn't know we had tea."
"Thank you." Maora smiled at the sisters. They were cute. Much like Komaki-chan and Haine-chan were. Though once again, Maora's plans were foiled. Damnit. Alone time with Ema shouldn't be THAT hard-
it looked like it would have to wait until the ball to be revealed...
"Oh, I found some. It might have been forgotten since I have not been shopping for a while." Lana nodded, smile remaining. "I will make some for you both." Back into the kitchen she went.
Ema smiled after her sister, then turned back to Maora. "What were you going to say?"
"Ah-" Maora smiled, then leaned her cheek into her hand, "Nothing. Just that I can't wait to see you dressed up." There was a smile, and Maora looked down at her neck. She quickly looked back up though so as not to draw attention to the fact it was bothering her.
Lana was once again in the kitchen, having added the noodles to the soup since the water boiled. She was now making sure it didn't boil too much, and stirred at it, listening to the conversation in the next room.
Ema smiled a little, pink once again. She dared herself to move a bit closer, closing what little gap had formed between them when Ema had released Maora from that hug. "Y-you really think I'll look nice?"
Now it was Maora's turn to be caught off guard. Be strong. Just like Haine-chan. "I do." She answered softly, looking down and studying Ema's features. She really was adorable. But despite the fact that Maora felt as though a sibling would feel, or a best friend...she leaned forward and gently pressed her lips to Ema's forehead, in the manner she had done to Haine-chan while dressed as Yuubinya-san.
The soup was soon ready, and Lana turned off the heat. She grabbed some bowls, made sure they were clean, and distributed the soup.
It wasn't a lot, but it was something. The tea was prepared in a similar fashion, with whatever mugs she could find. "Soup's ready."
Did Maora just... kiss her forehead? Ema looked upward at her, eyes clouded with many unasked questions about what the gesture meant.
Of course, the moment was interrupted by the announcement of dinner, and Ema looked quickly to the kitchen, then back to Maora. "Not quite crepes, but it's warm."
Finally deciding to pull away from Ema, Maora put a hand to Ema's back to lead her to the table. "Warm is always the best." The brunette said, a gentle tone in her voice. Her heart was still pounding.
Maora pulled out a chair for Ema to sit in, and then waited for her to do so, so she could push her in like you would on a date.
